is there any way to control cpu speed/fan speed on the s series other than via the limited vaio power management software?

Should I dare say that the S Series has been updated again.

Hi, I was wondering... the new GeForce 6200 Go w/ TurboCache... is that a 64-bit processor? Also, I read at Anandtech that it shares partially with your system memory.

I am curious is Sony America will release one that is in 256MB.

cpu temps

Hi all,

I was just wondering what other people's cpu temps are like. Mine seem to vary widely between 35C at morning startup (ambient is probably around 69F) up to around 60C during heavy operations. Most of the time, it seems to be in the upper 40's. The fan seems to come on around 40-41C for me, which means that it's on most of the time.

TIA

PS I've been using hmonitor to get the temps...

Type-S Highspec

The new Type-S Highspec site seems to indicate that it uses the "Sonoma" platform. Does this imply that the components (in particular, the video card) can be upgraded or is it just a faster FSB and memory speeds?

My S-270's only a month old; I wish I had seen this coming up, especially since I'm using linux and Nvidia's linux drivers are far better than ATI's current drivers.

Well, that's what eBay is for!

For future reference, the laptop manufacturers commonly come out with new models when Intel releases a new mobile chip... and it had been announced a while back that sonoma would be launched early this year...

At least the new models aren't any thinner or lighter.

hrmm so wait.. what exactly have they changed.. aside from sonoma.. he vid card? which card did they go to and how much better is it then the 9700?

i have a 260 and i dont game on it.. so i doubt i'll be in a rush.. more curious then anything..

for the fan comment

you could try opening it and placing artic silver.. but that will probably void some of the warranty at the very least..
i wonder how much info there is going on at talkvaio right now.

To my understanding, the new S-series announced in Japan uses 533Mhz FSB for selected Pentium-M, DDR2, PCI Express for GeForce 6200 TurboCache, Serial ATA, High Definition audio & ExpressCard slot.

Hopefully, Sony can fix the heat issue or whatever problems are in the original S-series.

Help! Anybody purchased a Sony Vaio between 12/11-12/17 in SonyStyle?

I purchased a S260 on 12/16/04 from SonyStyle. There was up to $500 eCoupon for future purchase. Today I called them, they said this eCoupon promotion was only valid until 12/10. I am so angry as I did see it's valid until 12/17. However, they said that they would not honor it until I could show them a proof. I never have this situation before so did not print out the promotion.
What could I do right now? Anybody has the same situation? If anyone has that promotion printed out, could you be kind enough send me a copy? Thanks a lot!!!

h00ligan,

Just a correction, the new S-series has no ExpressCard slot yet... hmm... too bad...

I was wondering of adding a Wireless USB Expess Card to my new S-series. Perhaps I should wait for the next S-series... lool... Last time, my excuse for waiting this release is the video card. Now, I want more...
Is this released yet? And how much?

Edit: Anyone know if this is able to be upgraded to a geforce 6800? I know that some laptops that have PCI-E graphics arent able to be upgraded.....for some reason.

I think that the new Type-S Highspec is shipping starting on the fifteenth in Japan. It seems to be reasonably priced, it seems to be about ~$4K maxed out, but a reasonable system (13.3 WXGA Clearblack, Pentium M 740, 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400 RPM HDD, CD-RW/DVD, normal life battery, English keyboard, and 3 year wide service) is ~$2,100.

You can configure one here: http://www.jp.sonystyle.com/Style-a/...S92/index.html

Edit: When you try to configure a Type-S Highspec, it now seems to indicate that they will be taking orders on February 10th.

Hi, I'm new to this forum and am considering buying Sonys VGN S-270. How long does it usually take for these new laptops from Japan before they can be ordered in US? I'm not in terrible rush to buy a laptop and could wait a month or so but wouldn't want to wait more than that. Thank you for your help!

I was at CES and the Sony rep said February for the new revision of the S -- I posted all the details over at TalkVaio.

However, one conflicting spec is that the rep definitely said ATI 9700, not nVidia...interesting! Somehow, I think the rep was mistaken because I highly doubt they are developing two radically different machines.

Ahhh this is driving me insane. This laptop is going to be coming out in Japan in the next couple of days. (Sony Vaio S High Spec). Can someone PLEASE tell me that since this is PCI-E then it means that I will be able to upgrade the Geforce 6200.
Guys quick question -- has anybody 'hacked' this laptop to have a USB external mouse WITHOUT the USB dongle that is usually present with those mice? I was thinking the USB dongle can somehow be mounted inside the laptop (IS THERE EVEN ROOM FOR THAT? :-) and the mouse can be used from the outside without anything sticking out!!!

Is that possible or am I crazy?

THANKS!!!

can anyone help me with any of the following queries about the s series (i have the european s1xp ie s170) -

- are there firmware upgrades for the matshita dvdrw, for region free and/or dual layer dvd writing

- can the cpu speed and fan speed be regulated precisely (as opposed to the options in via power management)

thanks if you can help in any way
