VAIO Type S - Page 9

I just ordered the Sony S to see if it will fit my needs.

If they release the S series with 9700 video card within 30 days I will return this low-end version and order it.

I know that return products cost the company a lot of money in terms of customer service, cannot resell as brand new, shipping, warehouse handling, etc. but that is the price Sony pays for bad marketing decisions.

I suggest everyone do the same that is waiting for an S with 9700 video card.

Shipping is not free so you will incur roughly $80 cost for both ways shipping... but that is all and you can test the computer out for 30 days.

Hey PCL, if the 9700 does not come out in 30 days and you like the notebook are you going to keep it?

I'm tempted just to get mine, but somehow, I know that is exactly what Sony wants ... I'm sure I'll get some more info from Ashley tomorrow.

Oh, I take it the Kurnspatrick deal fell through?

Thats good news. Anybody have any idea how long it was in other countries before the S was configurable? Or at least offered with 9700?

Looks as if Sony is folloing in Apples foot steps regarding the boutique stores.

nice, but 'tis pity that i live 3,000 miles away from it! man i wish i lived in silicon valley. but then i'd have to pay tax @ newegg, and that would suck pretty hard. compromises, compromises, compromises...

Just to see when the ship date was I added the S to my shopping cart, and look at the response.

Shipping Availability:
Available on or about Sep 01, 2004.

PLC, what did your s say when you ordered, or did you order from a reseller?

Sony does have their own store in New York city. It's on Madison Ave and 55th St. Store is split into two sections, first sells PS2, portables, DVD's and music CD's. The other sells everything else.

ahaha too bad for you sony orderers! have fun waiting!

I guess the free shipping on the XP pro version sold out quick.

You can still get the XP home and pay for shipping and get it shipped next day.

I am still talking to Kurns & Patrick. The price is looking to be $3250. I am worried about their "no return" policy and also that it will take nearly 3 weeks to get the item.

I am also concerned about what language the BIOS setup will be in (probably Japanese) and if I will be able to change things.

The good news for you bluetooth freaks is that it comes built in ;p

However if they sold out of the S150 XP pro and wont ship again till September that might mean we wont see a configurable model until Sept!

Opinions?
I have waited this long....September means I have 2 more months to save. The Kurns & Patrick deal sounds ok, but with caveats. Go down to circuit city, buy one there, see if meets your needs, then return it before 30 days. Now I just want to be clear that I am not suggesting you do anything unethical. Actually I think I just did.
I don't think it's worth it. it still seems pretty fishy to me. might want to make sure you have a translator nearby with the bios/stock OS (if it's coming from japan), and even if you do, it's not worth it IMO because 1) your paying a bit too much for not quite enough IMO and 2) there's no return policy so if it turns out that you got a defective piece of crappola or you just don't like how it feels you can't RMA it. final verdict: did someone say MITAC?

Well, you should easily be able to pick up an S150 in retail somewhere, even if there's a wait on SonyStyle. I'd only suggest that if you really want an S150 with a 9200.

If everyone who wants a 9700 orders the S150 now, Sony might mistakenly think it's a hit and that they made the right choice about only offering the 9200.

By September, we might start to hear word on PCI-E finally becoming available on other brands. That will make it even tougher to decide.
Retail stores charge you 15% restocking fee.

That would be roughly $300 bones

Sonystyle does not, all you have to do is pay for shipping.

If Kurns Patrick delivered within 1 week I would buy from them.

I bet the 1.8 processor and 9700 vid card wont sell for anything less than $2600 here in USA so price is not so bad.
speakign of PCI-E is there any chance that Sager/PCT will offer future mobo/vidcard upgrades for owners of the 4750 like they did with the 56xx series?

I have a contact at Sony I'll try on Tuesday ... she's the one who actually told me Sony dumped the A-Series 15.4" model. I'm sure she might have some more inside info.
Why did they dump that? Has anyone heard more about new Sony notebooks in the 15 inch range, ws or fs? I'm enticed by the s1xp even though I don't need an ultraportable, at the moment there is a big gap in their product range for a 'normal' high performance laptop.
PLC...I agree...I forgot about those restocking fees. If you absolutely have to have now, then go with your deal. Otherwise I would wait to see what pans out....will another month kill ya! Yeah probably, I have been waiting for a awhile now and even I am second guessing.....but goddamn it, I really liked the S. The older I get the harder it gets to plop down that many beans and not get what I want. In my younger days I would have had it already.
With ordering the S150 now I also get all the ENGLISH version CDs with drivers which I can use on the Japanese import

If returned total shipping costs will be like $60

Not bad imho
