VAIO Type S - Page 5

i'm not sure. i guess it could have been some crazy mad sale on a new unit or something, but it's been my experience that sonys just don't do that, especially vaios. i would lend more credence to the possibility that the guy who quoted it simply didn't realize he was referring to a refurb unit.

aikeo's prolly right. there's hardly any way you could get a truly new v505 for less than what its listed on sony's website. unless you steal one, of course.

I just had a n00b question.

If Sony allows us to configure the specs in the S Series would it be possible to select the lowest RAM, Processor, etc. and then buy better parts and swap them, and would this be a good idea?
it depends on the types of components (read: not diff. manufacturers, but different actual component designs). For example, if the proc. is soldered to the mobo then you can forget about that and if the memory is something like a 172-pin micro-dimm which are very hard to find, you might have trouble with a mem. upgrade too. i don't know too much about the s-series though cuz its totally out of my price range and therefore not really worth researching too much.

it is if you don't care about warranties.
I don't really care about Sony's warranty, its terrible.
what turanuk is trying to say is that if you mess around with your config after you buy it you'll prolly void your warranty, but seeing as the sony one is apparently terrible, i guess that that's not a problem. for you.

hey, the sony vaio s is at fry's in woodland hills right now for $1999.

1.6 pM
radeon 9200 32meg.

is there a reason it is not on sonystyle.com so that i can custom order it.

to be quite honest, on paper it looks good, in person it looks kinda cheap.

just my .02, what do i know i am a nOOb.

That post deserves a "wtf?!"

That is great news man.... I am going to have to look into it and make some calls tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up.

Hey Ender. I don't get why you you ditched the Fujitsu S. I personally think it's the best bang/buck in the subnotebook class. Any reason why you wouldn't go back to it?

S series is up on sony style as of Tuesday morning, BUT not configurable.........BASTARDS!!!!
Just did that live sony help and asked when it would customizable and if that would include the ATI 9700 gpu and "Jason" said he did not have that information at this time and to keep periodically checking the site.

Well, I hope we can get a concrete answer out of Sony on the 9700 soon. They'll lose everyone (on the enthusiast forums anyway) that was interested in the model if they don't offer it.

Hopefully, they're just in the preliminary stages of putting up the S pages. There are only two basic ready-to-ship models with no custom options. The only difference in the two models now seems to be Windows XP Home vs. Pro.

wow... interesting development.

2x256 meg dimms... WORTHLESS!

Here's a link to a PDF for one of the S models available in the UK:

hmm... each new revelation brings me another step closer to an Asus M6N. If the UK model has a 64 meg 9700, is there any reason to believe the US one will have 128?

That review also mentions 40fps in UT2004 at 1280x1024. For some reason, I don't find that to be particularly impressive. I haven't benchmarked, but on my desktop with a 9600XT, I run UT2004 at 1600x1200 without it ever skipping a beat and then sometimes in a 1280x1024 in a window on a 1600x1200 desktop with even better performance.

I'm not excited about a plastic case either. *sigh*.

No. There's never been any indication that it would be anything other than 64MB. I don't think any Sony models offer a 128MB GPU, not even the 17".

Looks like Sony is pushing off all the S series with lame video cards they pre-built but could not sell in Japan hahahaha

If Sony does offer the 9700, it may be after July. What a disappointment. It's time to commit to the U70.

wow, id buy this if it had the setup in the UK review, i wonder when/if theyll bring it to the states any time soon
