Well,
I'm curious to know if anyones using there laptops for production or minimal production. I'm currently looking to get one to use it for Alias Maya,3DStudio Max and After Effects. I'm wondering if anyones using it this way and how it performs? I'm looking at the 8790 with the 256ATI card, not sure if these have FireWire ports I'm assuming they do. Can someone give me some feedback on how theres performs and any reccomendations. Thanks in advance.
Cheers

A quick search should get you your answers straight from the horses' mouth, so to speak. I know I've read posts by multiple people saying Maya and 3DS run flawlessly. The term 'desktop replacement' holds true.

Hello Nesta,

I have the 8790 and I use the programs you mention everyday since this machine arrived. I used to use the Apple Powerbook 17 1.33 G4 but now that Apple is just laying around some where. The 8790 performs extremely well running those programs. Yesterday I was rendering a big file in Photoshop while modeling in Maya5 at the same time. This machine will be more than enough for the apps you're using.

To answer your other question, the 8790 does come with a firewire port. It uses a iLink connector (4pins) instead of the 6 pins. The firewire port is located in the front of the notebook (the only flaw of this notebook).

I couldn't agree more. I did most of my work (http://www.3d-realm.com) using an Athlon2000 with a crappy GeForce3 ti200, 3dsMax4+5. Thats been upgraded thank GOD, but I'm also doing some of my professional work on the 5690 and it works out just fine. It renders a LOT faster than the Athlon 2000
