Acer Ferrari 3200 review (just a few pics/couple benches) - Page 31

correct media detection may be fixed by upgrading drives firmware (that usually updates media information in the drive)... but dont know if already released...

To Snorre:
I installed the WinXP using my own version and installed the latest AMD64 process driver. But I still found it that the cup fans starts every 2-3 minutes.I use the MobMeter to check the temperature. The cpu is around 50-55 and the frequency is 1.83.I think the Cool and Quiet of the AMD64 technology doesn't work.Is it the same situation after you installed your own version of WinXP?Any way to cooler down the cpu. Thanks!

fskidd: You also should install the VIA Hyperion 4in1 chipset drivers, and to enable PowerNow! go to the Control Panel->Power Options->Power Schemes and select the Portable/Laptop power scheme. And to make sure that PowerNow! is working properly you should install & run AMD's PowerNow! Dashboard.
Thanks snorre.I successfully enable the Powernow! And also I upgrade to 1GB corsair memory by the method you pose. The Ferrari is indeed a real "Ferrari" now. Thanks again for your help!

to JoNaS^X: Where do you live? If you live in Europe, you must use PAL video settings and if in USA, NTSC. When using incorrect one of them, it causes that the picture become black and white. Just change it

does the ferrari 3200 support DDR333 or DDR 400

and also does DDR 333= PC2700 abd DDR400=PC3200?

thx
Called Acer tech support again. This time they sent me a new hard drive, after saying I must have some bad sectors on the original one. Switched the new hard drive in, which is actually quite easy, and it wouldn't do a system restore, using the original CDs that came with the system.

Did the F2 key after booting up, went to Boot, selected CD drive, inserted the discc, hit escape, enter, and I kept getting another blue DOS screen saying Windows couldn't open properly.

Any ideas? Was the new hard drive DOA?

I really like my Acer Travelmate 800, but this Ferrari 3200 ain't behavin'!

I'm asking for a new machine or my money back.

It support both and comes standard with DDR333 memory, but I recommend DDR400 for best possible performance.

Correct

Bootz: Bluescreen? Did you ever check the memory with Memtest86+ ? Download the ISO image from here.

Unpack the zip file and burn the memtest86+-1.26.iso using your favorite CD burning software, e.g. Nero Burning Rom (Recorder -> Burn Image -> memtest86+-1.26.iso -> Open -> Burn), and boot from the CD to run the test.
snorre, this stuff hurts my brain. I've burned memtest86 to a CD, but I can't get either the Acer Travelmate or the Ferrari to boot from the resulting CD.

It's showing memtest as a 900kb file. Is that right?

I appreciate your attempt to help, but I'm a relative newbie, and just can't follow what you're saying. It's all Greek to me.

The 3200 boots up from its old HD, but when I installed the new one, it wouldn't do a system restore from the restore CD. Why would that be a memory problem?

Bootz: Well, to make a bootable CD from the ISO image file see also this:
http://www.e-smith.org/docs/howto/CD_burning_howto.php3
http://members.home.nl/lsnoek/iso.htm

Memory problems are the most common cause for bluescreens, but you should also make sure that the restore CD is not faulty.
snorre, I hate to be a pain the butt, but how do you propose that I determine whether the restore CD is faulty or not?

What is the size of your memtest file on CD?

I looked at your link and it doesn't add anything to what I've already tried. I've got NIT CD Maker or whatever it's called, and it tells me that I've got a CD with memtest86+-1.26.iso on it.

Download Nero CD-DVD Speed and run the Scandisk surface scan:

You didn't create a bootable CD from the ISO image. To do this properly with NTI CD&DVD-Maker see here:

Click on New, then select Create CD from Iso CD Image File, choose your ISO file and click Open.

I want to combine the 5680 and Acer Ferrari

I don't like that you can't customize anything!

I want a fast rpm hard drive. I got a sager 5680 and I got it decked out. I like everything about it, except that I want an AMD 64 in it. They operate at a lower speed so they have better battery life, right? My 5680 with 1 gig of ram doesn't seem to even last an hour. And I want 64-bit computing capability.

I can't seem to find a computer exactly like mine, with a 2nd bay for a hard drive, floppy drive, tv tuner, ect, and great customization AND an AMD 64

Am I the only one who as a big gamer and someone who wants the best computer who can't find a computer like that?

There aren't any Sagers with amd 64's either.

What's the deal?

Well, there's the Sager 4750 which has a DTR AMD64. But, that one runs so hot, I wouldn't recommend it. If they would test the low-power mobile chips in them and offer those if they work, that'd be a nice notebook for anyone who didn't care about GPU upgradeability.

Oh cool. Still doesn't offer a second hard drive, and the big lcd screen adds money to it doesn't it? On the 5680 i could choose 15" or 17" wide screen I believe.

I thought clock speed affects heat. I have a P4 2.8 Ghz and it's hot. Surely the clock speed on this computers chip is lower and thus less heat and longer battery than mine, right?

Snorre, thanks for your advice. I've burned CDs every way they can be burned.

The latest one shows a 1.17MB file called MT126_Boot.

It will not boot the Ferrari 3200.

Again, what is the size of your memtest file on the bootable CD you use?

hey cnet and other review places say that the ferrari 3200 isnt as good as it is cuz it sucks in performance, the future is 64 bit but for now still things are 32 bit and when 64 bits are out in intel it would provide much higher speeds whats your comment?

1.17MB sounds right to me. I installed NTI CD & DVD-Maker just to make sure it works correct and selected Data -> Data CD -> File menu -> New -> File menu -> Create Disc from ISO Disc Image File -> memtest86+-1.26.iso -> Open -> Start to burn it myself. It booted perfectly here so it should work for you too.

To be sure that your notebook can boot from the CD, hit F2 during the Ferrari bootup screen and goto the boot menu and make sure that CD-ROM/DVD Drive is on the top of the list and then exit saving changes.

If you still can't boot from the CD, then either your CD or drive must be broken.

My comment is that the performance of this notebook simply is about the best out there, and that the 64-bit future will be here sooner than most people think. So far Intel's 64-bit processors are by far inferior to AMD's so that claim is just a lie. To summarize, the Acer Ferrari 3200 simply rocks!
