Acer Ferrari 3200 review (just a few pics/couple benches) - Page 33

Xenophon,

A laptop cooler is (usually) aluminium surface that you place under your notebook. It has either fans, or a heat-activated fluid that keeps your laptop cool.

Here's an example

P.S. Snorre, did you get my PM?

Does your F 3200 have an air intake under the HD?
Mine doesn't.

All intakes/outflows are built around the CPU, nothing for the HD under the left hand-rest.

I installed Omegadrives (without the RadLink, MultiRes just ATITool addon), but I stil get the problem with distorted screen (I even deinstalled the AtiTool just keeping Omegadrive).

When running on AC, I disconnect AC on the fly and the screen goes crasy, then I reconnect the AC and it's allright again.

Do you yourself have a Ferrari 3200? and if so have you the Omegadrive installed on it ???

I tested the AuqaMark3 with Omegadrive installed and the settings set to default (450/210). The score I got was only 12.66 fps. After restoring original ATI the score is now 26.21 (and the difference was clearly seen). Figure that out if you can...

My Ferari is now restored back to original ATI installation again using WindowsXP system restore...

I wonder if the Omegadrive on a Ferrari isn't a missfit.
I reccomend all Ferrari owners to skip this Omegadrive.

Xeno,

The cooler isn't intended to blow air into the laptop. It simply provides a cool surface onto which the laptop can radiate excess heat.

I have built a wooden chassis to put under the F 3200 in order to improve the airflow under it. It turns out much cheaper than the one you have Joshua, but again that only improves the CPU breathing and my +"*ç%& F 3200 has a fever problem that is not linked to the CPU.
My guess is that it is a Hard Diskproblem because the only spot that overheats, and plenty, is the plasic surface on top of it.
BTW if I put my nose on the left-hand rest, it stinks og hot metal and hot plastic.

This dosn't sound allright to me. The surface should not be more than about 45"C. Please download and install this program that measures CPU and Disk temperature. The big red chock-absorber under the disk also serves as a heat dispenser and should be in contact with a cool surface.

Yeah, but here's an even better laptop cooler that uses heatpipes:

Sure, I finally replied to it (took awhile to check all these things you know)

I experienced display distortion once using the previous version of the Omega Drivers, but after re-installing them these problems went away. I haven't experienced a single problem with the latest version of the Omega Drivers though, so what's happening to you is very strange indeed. Perhaps you didn't properly uninstall the old drivers before you installed the Omega ones?

Snorre,

Thanks very much for the helpful reply.

Are you actually using the Nexus? Do you recommend it over the Vantec? I'd rather use something without fans.

Josh, talk to OGREtheBUFFOON, one of the members here, as he uses the Nexus on his laptop (a sager 4750) and it supposedly helped him a lot in terms of temps. good luck!

Thanks Okle.

I've seen Ogre's comments. I was just curious about how Snorre's might be working with his 3200.

I'm not using any laptop cooler, and I really don't need it since I have a solid steel desk at home and that keeps my notebook rather cool. It seems to me like the Nexus is the best laptop cooler of those two and I'm planning to get one, to use at work, but unfortunately I can't find a dealer that carries this product in my country

hey snorre,, how hard is it to upgrade the RAM in my notebook? i want to change the 512 with 1gb of ram.

also.... i have "product warranty void if seal is broken" over my ram and hd slots... is that a good thing?
umm, not really, as it would nullify your warranty in that seal was broken... and you'd have to remove the keyboard in order to replace both RAM modules, as one is under it. Snorre's done it tho, and i think the process is somewhere in this thread. take a look-see and spare our good ol' buddy here the trouble.

Thanks for your comments Snorre,Joshua and Waxinator.

What I did today was the following :

Downloaded and installed Mobilemeter.

Ran Norton Antivirus and watched the temperature of the HD.
It started off at 43 Celsius and reached 54Celsius about 70 minutes later.
I then launched “defragmentation”: it analyzed but got stuck at 1% compacting files.
Three times I restarted it, three times it got stuck at the same spot.

While doing this I set an external thermometer on the left-hand side of the laptop over the HD location: the temperature reached 38Celsius on the outside.
This temperature is what I call uncomfortable.
The right-hand surface remained at 20Celsius,the room temperature.

During all that time (about two hours in all) the CPU temperature did not exceed 48 Celsius.

What HD would you recommend, if I have to replace the factory one Snorrer (although I guess this would void the guaranty)?

Waxinator, it sounds odd when you say the external surface over the HD should be around 45 Celsius, that would be over 120 Farenheit.

Thanks again,
X.

as always, i would recommend the Hitachi 7k60 (60gb, 7200rpm), but if you need the extra 20gb of storage, then i would suggest the Hitachi 5k80 (80gb 5400rpm). i personally prefer the latter, but thats just me. the only difference would be slightly longer install times/load times for games and stuff with the 5400rpm, but in reality the performance is very close, and they are all superior to the 4200rpm one that comes with the Ferrari. they are also a tad cooler AFAIK

Yes, I do, but it only happens when running on battery. Plugged in sleep is fine. It happens both with stand by and hibernate. I think it might have something to do with SP2 but im not sure considering i installed it right when i got my laptop.
