FINALLY!! I ordered my 600m

Well I finally convinced my parents to buy the 600m, after i discovered I could apply 200 off to the already 150 off offer. Here are the specs for my first laptop ever.

600m
1.8 ghz Pent-M
14.1 inch SXGA+
256 RAM (dell selling ram upgrades should be a crime)
40GB
24x CDRW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive
Intel 2200 PRO Wireless b/g
ATI Radeon 9000 64MB
Windows XP Professional
Dell Premium Service Plan (4yrs warranty + 4yrs completecare)

I applied coupon BQS1B9S4C0KFCL which took off another 200. That one expires today along with 150 off and some other device upgrades.

Total before tax: $1843.00
After: $2067

I can't wait till she gets here. I got myself a good deal, eh?

Those are some great specs....you will be VERY pleased with the 600m's form factor...its quite nice.

Is the warranty At-Home (on-site) or Mail-in?

that's the great part of the premium service: it's all at-home service. it's a good deal if you're looking for long-term coverage as i am.

There was a price error in Dell Canada website for 600m last nite. My sister gets a 600m with Centrino 1.6g, 512mb, 14.1" SXGA, ATI 9000 64MB, 60G, DVD/CD writer combo, and 3 year hardware wannaty for 1000 US dollars.

Today she called me and told me that she didn't really like its look, and I told her to sell it to me.

you paid a lot for your system... no offence, i would have gotten a 8600 for how much money you spent.

the 600M is a good laptop. I use it myself. I went with it because I drag my laptop everywhere with me. When I am flying I like the less weight I am dragging around. It is also easier when going my master's program or customers to do work when I am hauling other stuff with me.

Holy heck IANOU, that's a hell of a deal.

nickmv, you'll be happy with the 600M. Good buy. You might consider upgrading the RAM though.

pumer, definitely, im gonna upgrade to 784 RAM. As for the comment on me and the 8600, i dont want an 8600. if someone gave me an 8600 i'd throw out the window or sell it on ebay. some people prefer portable notebooks. and the 8600 is nowhere near portable at 7+ pounds.

I'd get a 600m if the video chip wasn't so lame compared to the mr9600/9700

i'm not getting a notebook to play games though. i'm getting a notebook to get work done. thats what my desktop is for. besides, 9000 is not that bad graphics anyways.
the mr9000 can still play all current games, and play them well. But if you require a very high FPS and the best graphics of all(dx9 stuff) than obviously you don't need a thin and light notebook. So for a thin and light, the 600m is actually a good gamer. But for all notebooks it's not too great, but the 600m was just right for me, and i'm happy with mine.

Oh and when you get yours, the dell video drivers suck, really they are awful. So get the latest ones from www.omegacorner.com and you'll be happy

Sterlin, i just got a 600m, please explain what's better about the omega drivers? I tried playing Colin Mcrae 04 last night and it ran just fine, but perhaps i would get even better performance with the omega drivers? Is that their advantage, better performance? The Omega site doesn't really say what makes them better! The drivers that dell ship are just the standard catalyst drivers aren't they?? Thanks for any info.

May I suggest that whenever you see a post that asks if such-and-such is a good deal, change "deal" to "value".

Is it a good value to you? Maybe not.

Is it a good value for someone else? What was their budget? Are they overspending? Does it have everything they want in it? Are they pleased with their purchase?

There is no need to burst every balloon, just because it's there.

I hear many people taking their 8600 places with them with no hassle what so ever. 7 lbs isn't the worst in the world, and according to the type of bag you have , a backpack or what not, it's something that you could carry around. Maybe not all the time, but like once a week -- it's highly possible.

The difference in weight/size between I600m and I8600 is non-negligible to many users. I8600 would suit my needs better, but I wouldn't mind if it were lighter and thinner like I600m!

ok you've made a good point. i need to rephrase. if you plan on carrying your laptop in a laptop bag (not backpack) and you plan on using the shoulderstrap, over time you will notice a difference in just a pound. i've experienced it before when carrying around a hefty but compact sony vaio compared to carrying around a light iBook.

My i8600 is a desktop replacement for college, but its light and small enough to still carry around.
