TouchPad and 3D Gaming

Hello :-)

I am currently a ThinkPad user and am accustomed to using a trackpoint.
Actually I got so much used to the trackpoint that I prefer it much more than any mouse.
Especially in 3D Gaming. The reasons are:

1. Your hand using the trackpoint is on the keyboard at the same time, so you are able to push any button on the right side of the keyboard without problems simultaneoulsy. So if you want to press Enter you don't have to jump with the other hand or leave your pointing device.
2. You don't have to do repeated movement, like when you reach the end of your mouse pad, shifting the mouse again to continue the same movement.
If you do a 90 degrees turn and realize the other direction would be better you can without a problem continue to do a 270 degrees turn faster by just pushing harder.
3. Of course compared to a mouse you can play on a couch or in bed :-)

My problem is that imo IBM machines are overpriced (at least here in Germany). I don't really see the reason to pay the double price to an Acer Laptop just because the keyboard and chassis are better.
And concerning quality... hmmm well.. I have a 570 and A31 and both had to be repaired at least once and my colleagues also very often had problems with their thinkpads. So I guess you're not completely safe with any laptop.

So I was wondering which other manufacturers produce laptops with TrackPoints or if I get used to using a TouchPad if I can use it the same or better than a mouse as well. Actually I never liked TouchPads but I never really tried to get accustomed to them anyway.
I just don't want to be forced to connect an extra mouse to my next laptop.

The Toshiba Tecra M2 has the option of having a trackpoint, touchpad, or both. The HP TC1100 tablet pc also has a trackpoint.

Hmmmmmmmm....I dunno....I have both a trackpoint/touchpad on my Dell, and I still prefer a mouse when playing games such as BF 1942, Warcraft 3, ect.

Thanks for the extremely fast replies. Yeah I played WC3 and Unreal II on my current A31 ThinkPad. And I preferred using the TrackPoint. But I guess a greater reason is that I like to sit down on the couch when playing as well ;-)

Well, yes, in that case, the TrackPoint would be the way to go.....I'll have to sink back in my parent's couch sometime and try that out...it's probably far more relaxing.

whats a trackpoint?

Whats a trackpoint, is that those little eracer thingys that are above the g key or something? if so, those things are great.

Trackpad's better, I find. I had this little trackpoint thingy on my IBM, and it makes your finger sore after hours of usage. But it's definitely rather nice to have, though I believe a properly configured trackpad is more powerful (ability to move mouse faster, and as many "hot spots" as you want).

Some computers have both... Perhaps the best way to satisfy everyone.

Nothing beats a mouse, though

Well the Dell Latitudes have both the touchpads and the trackpoints (my dad has this laptop). To be honest this thing is massive though (17" display) but it is all up to you not sure if other Dell laptops are the same since I never even looked at Dell for an option for my lappy .

back when I had toshiba, i can play dune 2 and doom 2 using the trackpoint just as effective as using mouse ... but today's mouse is so advanced with all the extra buttons, high sensitivity, etc, it's just no comparison between a trackpoint and logitech mx700 ... imho

Or even a Logitech mx510. This mouse rocks!
