Built-in wireless problem

Thread Starter
Sager 8887 XP Pro 3 days old. Dlink wireless router. Other wireless desktops working fine. (the router is working fine)Can connect as long as I am facing the router and am within about ten feet from it. Otherwise, I have good signal but can not browse

I set up continuos ping and monitored signal strength using installed software. Signal never droped below good throughout the house. Recieve thruput stayed normal yet the TX thruput dropped to 0 at about ten to fifteen feet.

Any ideas?

Antenna is connected to the pci card. Already checked.

This sounds odd. Let's hope it's software and not an antenna defect.

If reception is fine, but Tx isn't, it sounds like there is not enough power getting to the antenna to transmit; unfortunately this sounds like a hardware problem.

Is there any way to confirm this without replacing the mini PCI card? I doubt it but it doesnt hurt to ask.

Mine is having the same problem as well, have the 8887 with the mini pci. I borrowed a friends wireless router, it works perfect in my room but when i go upstairs the signal is still good 60%-66%, while watching the monitor program and still can't browse.

Any ideas on why its not working. If i have my laptop next to the router i get a 100% but thats only probably because its right next to it.

Could i purchase a wireless pc card put that in the slot disable the mini wireless and find out if it is the mini wireless that is having problems? Would that somewhat prove that theres something wrong the internal wireless?

Thanks,

I don't think your problem is the exact same, it looks like you have a signal, but cannot use the connection. Most likely a connection setting thing. Does your router have WEP enabled? If so, do you have the proper key? Also, if you are using a DHCP server, try checking/unchecking the box that lets windows manage settings. Some don't like it, some do.

As for SDSwearing's problem. I don't know of another way to confirm it apart from what you've done (it works close up, but doesn't further away).

It could be either the miniPCI card itself or the antenna. Sounds like a good thing to ask Sager (via e-mail or phone).

Sorry I couldn't be more help,

Follow up-

The mini PCI wireless card has two antenna connections. I hooked the antenna to the other connection and to my amazement I'm up and surfing at light speed. Hope this can help somebody in the future.

Interesting... I'll have to look at mine (though, I've been working flawlessly since day one)... wonder what the other connection is for...

Which antenna connector is the one that worked best for you?

If you are looking down at the card with the screen in front of you, there are two connectors. One is on the left the other on right but basically side by side. I switched from the left to the right. Hope that helps.

SDSwearing,

What do you mean by that you changed the connection, on my sager i see the icon, the 2 sides are green indicating a good connection, but when i click on mine it brings up the prisim settings, and i see no option to change which antenna it uses.

Can you give a little more information to help me change mine as well, hopefully it will correct my problem where the connection doesn't work when im upstairs. Upstairs isn't that high, maybe about 10ft. if i stand right above my room downstairs when im upstairs i don't get a connection.

Thanks

The connection is a physical connection on the mini pci card itself. You have to remove the keyboard and get to the motherboard. You'll see the wireless card with an antenna connecting to one of two possible spots on the card(which are right next to each other). I simply switched connections. Let me know if you need more help.

Well i just did the change over for the wireless connection thing, i will let you know SDSwearing if the thing worked, i hoped it did work because i really don't want to have to go back in there again. It took a while to snap the wire onto the connection.

Thanks, SDSwearing for figuring it out.

SDSwearing,

Gues what it works better than before, my signal is stronger than it was before or very similar the only difference is that i am able to use my wireless when im upstairs so, its all good.

I don't see my changing the connection would make a difference because there on the same card, is there something different with the other connection or is there a good reason why it would be different. Such as one side is for the right antenna and the other connection is for the left one. I know when adam did the picture thing for the wirless i saw that it was ran through the LCD on both sides.

Anyway, im super happy now that i can use my wireless, the way it was made for, not in a closed area.

thanks again,

I had the same problem:
Continuous ping works when the router is in sight and within
~10 feet or so. If there is ANY obstruction, ping times out. If it
goes beyond ~10 feet, ping times out. So it was pretty much
useless.

I read this thread and called up Sager and they guided me
through same steps. We changed the same connector from
left to right and viola...Wireless is working super.... it is pinging
continuously from everywhere in my apartment, even in my
toilet-with the door closed !

This forum is great!

Hey, no fair!

I didn't order an internal wireless card with my 8887. I want to get one just so I can have problems, fix it and enjoy this elated feeling you're all having!

Because aside from not having internal wireless, my 8887 is working beautifully

Actually I do have a question regarding the internal wireless. On my dad's laptop there's a toggle switch next to the power button so you can turn the wireless card on/off. Supposedly turning it off lets you conserve battery power.

On my 8887 I have a PCI card, and while I have it plugged in, I sometimes go into network connections and disable it, and I can visually see the green light on the card go off.

Does disabling the wireless network in the Windows Network settings turn off the internal card?

This is not a big question for me, as I plan to get an internal wireless card later on, regardless. I wanted to wait for the 802.11g to see how it was, as the 802.11b that I'm using is a little too weak to reach all throughout the cottage workshop in our backyard.

I was just curious about how the internal wireless works. If I'm asking a silly question here, just yell at me as I had too much caffeine tonight
