Am I an Idiot?

I was really trying hard to find myself a laptop (alienware-like), but affordable, that I could hold on too a long time before having to upgrade. I want to be able to play today's biggy games coming up like Half life 2, Doom 3, etc. I knew I needed a fast processor so I got the 3.2 pentium 4, I knew I needed memory so I got 512. I knew I needed the fast dvd/cd/rw so I got that. I got the card (as much as I could afford) 9600 Radeon. But, I totally overlooked something that just hit me as I was cruising the gaming forums. I forgot about the hard drive. I got a 40 gig hard drive. I ordered my Sager with all these specs and it's now in transit. I've got the UPS tracking and everything. But I suddenly realized I picked the 40 gig hard drive with 4,200 rpms. Now, after the fact, I'm reading that I needed at least 5,400 or higher or it will slow my games, which is the whole reason I shelled out 1,700 grand for a new laptop. Ugh. Did I make an error here? Help!!!

A 5400 RPM would be better. I'm stuck with a 4200rpm hard drive here. It's not that bad, the only thing it slows down is the loading, not the actual game. For example, Max Payne 2, runs perfectly fine 60fps constant. Unreal, 50-60 fps constant. I have no complaints for those games, but of course I am not sure about the future games.

A 4200rpm hard drive will make loading times longer, and can slow down your games, IF ALL physical memory has been used up already. You will have NO problem playing today's games.
You will need to upgrade the hard drive though since it's slow. Just buy a new HDD and use both on the laptop. You'll need to boost your RAM as well, 512 is like the minimum now for today's games, to play with full quality textures without constant pauses

You guys aren't stuck w/ slow HDs. Like Amir said, go buy a new HD and stick it in your machine. Simple. Really, it's not difficult at all. PITA to reinstall Windows, but hey- that's just a fact o' life when you're installing a MS OS.

Once you do that, go buy a ~$20 2.5" USB 2.0 External drive case, throw your 40gig in it and use it for backup or on-the-go storage. They're pretty darn slick. Helps when you've got big files you want to stick on another computer and the files are too big to stick on a flash drive, etc.

All is not lost When given lemons, make lemonade, yo!

Yes, you are an idoit.

This thread should be posted in the "Sager General" section.

This is not a tech problem.

Perhaps I am an idiot. But, I am polite and have manners. And I'm not mean spirited or rude or mean to others. And I'm not so uptight as to get my panties in a bunch on where someone decides to post their thread. At least I have my priorities in order and know that being nice is by far more important than being smart. I think the good lord would agree with me.

Wow.... Can you feel the love? Oh BTW, welcome to the forums Idiotboy... HAHAHA! And Michael Jackson? Where the hell was he involed :P HAHAHAHA!

To the Computer Hardware Topic:
I've had 4200rpm drives, 5400's and 7200s.... You would benifit from more ram that you would HDD speed... but yeah, the 7200's are pretty damn nice...

Now on to the topic at hand...
Are you an Idiot .. Idiotboy.... ??? The name would prove a point but I will be more diplomatic.... and just say.... Sure why not! (although has nothing to do with your computer buying abilities.)

AND......

After this friendly exchange ...... you will probably expouse that anyone that "disagrees" with you is "picking on you" or "Dis'ing You". I remember you from a few months back - A complete JERK with nothing but "smart ass" remarks to offer.

I'd call you an idiot; however, won't -- don't want to insult the idiots, nor elevate your standings/intellegance level. Yep... that's a bit of a flame; however, in your cause probably not, it's merely a case of "Truth Hurts Don't It" type of thing.

Please find a rock and crawl under it and leave us alone. Or better yet, "get a life"!!

BTW - This 4780 forum does not belong to you.

In reply to Beachbum's above quote, Captain Al asked what Michael Jackson has to do with anything. A valid question. Let me explain. Folks with the same mindset of Beachbum equate kindness and civility with weakness. In other words, he is saying that if you are not insulting others and burping while doing it then you are gay or a potential child molester. I don't know what his father did to him. Perhaps he was taught that posturing machismo means your a man, and being kind doesn't. That is one twisted view. To some being a man is picking fights and using the F word a lot. And if you are polite and believe in the golden rule, then you are "weak minded" and fondling young boys. I have observed, however, that guys with the same view of Beachbum's are the same guys who cry for their momma in foxholes while the "weak minded" guys are risking their butt to pull them out of harms way.

You should've picked a more fitting user name, Idiotboy. You sound nothing like the name you've chosen. Perhaps you and Beachbum ought to trade.

Thankyou FriedToast, but I'm not wizard at computers. I use them to play games, but don't know the first thing about how they operate. I went ahead and ordered the faster hard drive and when It comes I'm going to send back the slower one and pay the difference. Yet, I have another question. When it comes how do I take out the old Hard drive and put the new one in? Is there a step by step guide on how to do that or is it easy? Is there a link somewhere with pics and instructions?

It's pretty simple, best thing to do... ^^^ Search Button ^^^^ on the top of the page will give you a few ideas.... Otherwise : http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=10978

Not step by step instructions, but gives a damn good idea where to look!

I finally got my notebook and installed the 7,200 rpm 60 gig hard drive. I'VE NEVER had a laptop before. number one, I can't friggin type . The keyboard is small and not close enough. Number two, my friggin wrists are hot as the computer is really like an oven. Is this normal?

The 4780's (I asumming that's what you have) tend to be on the warm side. Is this a brand new unit or one that you bought used? If used, there may be some dust bunnies interrupting the air flow and causing some increased heat. There is program called Mobil Meter that measures the internal temperatures. I don't know if this works on the 4780; however, if it does, then please provide some temperature readings.

Now some "interum things" you might consider. I'd see if there was any way to slightly raise the laptop on artificual legs. I'd make the front ones about 1/3 less high than the rear ones. This should improve air flow and circulation a little bit. I'd suggest about 1/2 increase height increase in the front.

If you are using the machine on your lap or on anything other than a table or flat surface that is not covered by fabric, then this might be a real problem. The vents (intake) are on the bottom of the machine and if they are obstructed (even slightly), the temperature get real high is a real hurry.

If brains were dynamite, you wouldn't have enough to blow the kneecap off a flea. It's truly amazing the way you never let an idea interrupt the flow of your typing, but then, making sense isn't your area of expertise, is it? Reading your post makes blindness a wonderful thing to look forward to. As Robert Wilensky said: "We've all heard that a million monkeys banging on a million typewriters will eventually reproduce the entire works of Shakespeare. Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not true."
