Dell Inspiron 8600/is there a IR port?

According to some pictures on this website, there is a IR port that is built into the optical drive bay but on Dells website it's not even listed that it exists. Is there an IR port or no?

The was one on the original i8600 revisions right below the PCMCIA card slot. But the i8600c revision that was released and subsequently replaced these earlier ones a month or two back now does not offer the IR port. Dell also cut the trackpoint, serial port, parrallel port and moved a few vents around in the 'c' revision.

Why in gods green earth are they removing all the ports? That settles that, I aint buying no Dell.

They are old ports. In the IR's case they want you to use Bluetooth instead.

Exactly. They are just following Intel's line as always. Intel wants to cut out all the "legacy ports" and such, so Dell complied. It aslo cuts manufacturing cost so they can reduce the price for consumers, but I doubt that would be more than a couple dollars...

Well ok that makes sense, I mean I dont use serial or printer ports anymore so no argument there. But an IR port should NOT be removed! My cell phone has IR and I wanted to be able to transfer pictures and stuff to the notebook, now I can't do that and I aint buying no 80 dollar cable to do it either. Funny, the phone I have is a Samsung E715 it's like a 300 dollar phone and it doesnt have BT, lol. Geeze I'm not doing very well am I? Also my carrier is TMobile and even beginning to try to use the email feature is enough to put me in the ER! It's extremely complicated, you have to remember codes bla bla bla so I cant email the stuff to my email either.

Oh well life sucks.

The New 600m's still have: IR/Serial/Parallel/Gigabit Ethernet.

True, but they are in a totally different league than the i8600 in terms of screen, power and size. Once you have widescreen, you'll never go back

That's something to trust him on, I've never used a widescreen for a computer.

Yeah, you should, the extra room is amazing I can tell you. But it is personal preference as so many other of these issues are....

No it is not personal preference, widescreens flat out own regular aspect screens. That's how it is. Just like everyone knows the blue quicksnap is better then the red one.
/sarcasm

Joking aside in my opinion the widescreen does rock

ditto - even though I have a sharp monitor, and a good looking one at that. *rim shot*

I can barely stand to look at my old 17" moniter on my desktop after having my i8600.

I know. Widescreen is purely addictive ans should become the standard IMO.

The iXPS still has an IR port (I'm using it to sync my present PDA--eventually will use bluetooth or something to sync my future PDA).
I noticed that Alienware is putting a parallel port in their Area 51-m. That surprised me.

I totally agree. But consider WUXGA. It's wonderful.

I've used WUXGA on my i8500, and its not for me. It is too small to make working on it comfortable, as increasing the DPI distorted a lot of the programs I use for Uni, etc..... so I had to run it 96dpi normal font size. I got headaches after a few hours. Since I got the WSXGA on my i8600 though have been very happy, its the perfect size. That's just my preference anyway, I am glad you are enjoying it!

Yet another happy WUGXA'er. I remember a time when it felt like I was the only one. It's to small they say, I can't see it..the day is mine now
