so whats holding u back? does it not have firewire?
Only place I see them "cheap" is on EBAY, and they are usually the slower 1.5GHz range CPU's and 32MB of video RAM, besides I am NOT doing EBAY for a notebook!! If you could send or post me a link to a reseller offering them for less money than HP, I would love to have that, but I really need it now!
Please let me know ASAP.
Thanks!

From ordering the Thinkpad?? Just knowing what the SXGA+ Flexview is really like:
1.) Some people have reported it is REALLY slow with noticeable ghosting. Don't know how much ghosting I would experience in my use of it?
2.) Whether I can comfortably work off a 15" SXGA+
The firewire is no big deal. I already have a PCMCIA firewire card, but I would really have liked to leave my PCMCIA available for other use. Again, that is NOT the deal maker-breaker.

"expensive" reseller haha

i thought u didnt need to play games why u need 64 mb
post #105 of 145
oh gosh man just throw out all the SXGA+s and be done with it =D
post #106 of 145
wow thats not expensive at all

9600 card too

32mb should be fine... for golf games
Like I Said.

aamsel i would agree the price goes up hugely when you look at 1.7 / 1.8 systems, but i think that is because hp includes more junk you don't need in their standard 1.7 packages

if you feel you can *stoop* to 1.5 (golf games? ) you can get one for like half the price of your ibm config

just tryin to help you save some money man. actually a LOT of money

Light gaming. I currently play stuff like Tiger Woods 2004 and Links 2004, nothing demanding for framerate. However, I thought that it would be better to get at least a 9600 card so that the machine would have some longevity.

That's ok, guys, I will go fight this out with myself...

As I said VERY early on, no...I don't have current high demands for a system, but I want something that will be good for 1 1/2 to 2 years, and I know I would kick myself if I "cheap out" now. I tend to re-purchase fairly quickly, but I do usually find a use for higher-end equipment. I would be really pissed if I wanted to run something in 3 months that my system could not handle easily, and also, I might decide to play a few more 3D games.

Again, it is my "battle", and I can do it alone, especially if it is irritating to listen to.
I will post when I order something.

Later,

hey rince would u believe that i found that newegg nc6000 config on ebay for $1150 buy it now, 3 yr warranty, from a powerseller with 98% feedback

its not there anymore someone bought it

Not bad (the newegg deal). I will weigh that against a configured nc6000 and the IBM (which, yes, I can increase the font size and probably be completely happy with it) and try to make a decision. I think it is between those two models (the nc6000 and the Thinkpad T42).
If anybody knows anything good or bad about Flexview that I have not been able to read about, PLEASE let me know ASAP. I have read that it is kinda like SONY Xbrite and the Fujitsu "whatever" screen, but with NO glare. Cons: slow refresh, but don't know that would matter to me. Some reports of minor ghosting on DVD playback, but most people say that is not true.
Lemme know,

aamsel- What about the Tecra M2? Uses the 5200, but at least it's 64 MB. Gets great reviews.
My other reason for more video RAM (64MB) was in case I ever want to hook the lappy up to a large external monitor. I am currently looking at some 21" to 23" LCD's for desktop use, and wouldn't want to be completely limited.

http://reviews-zdnet.com.com/IBM_Thi...-30871787.html

read the zdnet customer reviews about the t42...

"First, the material that covers the LCD is made of rubber-like covered magnesium composite. This cover scratches easily as well as dents easily on the edges just by picking up the laptop out of your case. I wish they had used a cheaper harder plastic cover or used the same titanium composite they used for the bottom"

edit wow there is a VIDEO review of the laptop
afer wathing it i did notice a GLARE similar to teh sony xbrite/fujutis screns...its a reflective glare
post #119 of 145
Yeah, I saw that, but the keyboard was reviewed several places as having "annoying amount of flex" in the center, so I probably would go for the nc6000 over it. The only "knocks" on the nc6000 (for me) over the nc8000 or the Thinkpad, are the lower 3D bench scores due to the slow clock. Again, this might never matter to me, but, being a true techie, I just don't know today what I will want to run, or do next month.
