Finally ordered a Dell 8600... - Page 2

Yes, a frequently overlooked point is that one should keep backups at several locations. Just think about fire, burglars, etc.

Confirmed the order today. Actually, the rep said her boss said I wasn't allowed to have the free bag as a $100 discount due to me not taking MS Office (Which was default).

They added the $100 back on so I exchanged the bad for a HD upgrade from 40GB 7200 to 60GB 7200.

Order confirmed and will ship Monday. They said 10 working days from then.

That was a good move. But even if it means 7K60 (not E7K60), you should still make backups regularly.

That is better I think, you'll enjoy the 7k60. But as KCK said, you should still make backups. No matter how good or reliable a drive may be, there is always a chance of failure, theft or damage to it..... better to be safe than sorry.

yup, i use "backup now", that makes backup of my selected files\folders on an external hd 2 times a week.

Cool. I'm having 2nd thoughts on the purchase. Not the specs, just no real use for a notebook at the moment.

So I'll probably wait until I need one when everything will be cheaper or new ones will be out unless anyone has a reason to convince me otherwise.

Does anyone use one fo the newer one button external HDD backups such as those offered by Maxtor? Do they offer any great advantage over a standard drive and casing arrangement? How long does it take to ghost say 40GB to one of these drives via both USB 2.0 and Firewire?
Cheers

well, i trashed the prog that came with my maxtor.

was the worst software i have ever used, it constantly froze the machine on backup. (dantz retrospect)

now i have 2 programs,- "Acronis true image" that makes a image of the hd, used when all programs, os, updates etc is installed, and makes it easy to start fresh.

and nti backup now! that backup just new files\folders etc 2 times a week.

and the button on the maxtor u can configure to open any program...
