Mitac8050 vs Compal CL56 vs Asus M6x

how would you do a good comparison of goods/bads of these laptops against each other?
i know the Mitac 8050 has a good price on rjtech
xtremenotebooks has a version of the compal for a good price

but where can i find a good price of the ASUS system
i would like rjtech but they are in california and as a result will charge me tax

edit: i am talking about the ASUS M6Ne or M6BNe (wide screen)

mackol-

I am in the exact same boat. These three are the exact three that I am contemplating. I am starting to lean away from the M6NBe, because it only has the 9700 64MB gpu.

yeah. if someone could actually give a good comparison it would really help me, been and others for sure. it would be truly appreciated. one of the big issues here is also $$$$

those are all great laptops along with the aopen1557g

internally hardware wise they can be configured roughly the same... and when you have a system thats the same hardware wise it really does come down to the nitty and gritty in aesthetics, funtionality, layout, additional small features

(which isnt usally advertised on a sale page... thats where owner reviews from this forum come in handy @ pctorque)

although ive only owned and seen the compalcl56 i can comment about what ive read from other owner reviews:

8050
-looks the best hands down
-gets 3.5 hours mobile time (lowest of the bunch)
-ctrl key is not where its normally suppose to be (fn key is in its place)
-left palm rest gets warm
-has widesceen display so viewing angles will be better than CL56

cl56
-prolly the ugly duckling of the bunch, aesthetically
-gets 4.5 hours which is inbeteen the asus and the 8050
-keyboard layout is perfect, does not have numberpad like on the 8790
-palm rests do not heat up, nor does the laptop anywhere except for bottom rear... excellent thermal designs on the inside
-standard sxga+ screen... while it may be fien for some.. some others who need a presentation type display feel that it is inadaquiet

asusm6n (9700)
-2nd best looking of the bunch
-gets the most mobile time (5 hours+) and has dual battery support (for 8 hrs)
-keyboard is also perfect on this, does not have numberpad like on 8790
-unsure about heat warming up anywhere,,, might want to ask holywarsxxx or mister569
-comes with widescreen which would prolly be bette than CL56 interms of better viewing angles
-gpu on the m6n only comes in 64mb... which is fine for games, but some more intensive ones like farcry may not run very well with all graphic detail turned on high,, u may need to make some comrpormises

rincewind, u rock
what is the Aopen1557g?? and how are the prices on these laptops?
if i had to say it gets warm in one spot...it would have to be under the ram while gaming....and warm by the video chip but not hot :-)

You showed pictures of this notebook rincewind, with no heat plating underneith the keyboard. Wouldn't this create alot of heat?
yes this could potentially be a problem. really the only thing separating the heat-generating components from your hands is the keyboard.

plus i'm not sure the 2-keypress issues got resolved with something like a bios change (yet). that's why many people have scratched the aopen lately.

so yeah, choices for me are
Mitac 8050
AOpen 1557g
Compal CL56
Asus M6Ne

i think i dont like Mitac because of the keyboard and brand name
the Aopen for the reason mentioned above

i am debating between compal and the asus.
i am really looking for a laptop ~6 lbs or so and those 2 fit well with a good battery life and around $1700. problem with the asus is that the reseller rjtech is in california and tax itself is like $150
post #10 of 37
Proportable also sells the Asus M6x, with the 9700 gpu...if that helps...what is wrong with the Mitac brand name? I have never even heard of them other than on here.

sorry, they will start selling it on monday. I have been in contact with Justin, the owner

Has anyone noticed a lot of the new laptops coming out have the fn key on the far left now? ON the lastest issue of mobilepc they did 7-8 reviews of ultraportables and if you look closely at the keyboard 5 or 6 of are like this. perhaps this is preferred more in ASIA/EUROPE?

eek. i configured the m6n to $1930
thats like $200 more than the compal. or maybe there is a cheaper reseller out there.??
The Asus was really comparable to the Compal I configured, maybe just a little more. I looked at the Compal at discountlaptops, and hypersonic (think I may go with hypersonic) and the Asus at proportable (only place that had the 9700 vs. the 9600). try contacting some of the other places that sell the M6x, so see if they will sell the Asus with the 9700...

the list of other ODM's is here: http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=22187

p.s...if you do contact the other ODM's, let me know if they offer the 9700 on the M6x

ungcas, i have no idea why ODMs are putting the FN key there. i personally hate it and know plenty of gamers that do too. in asia/europe gaming is much more prolific than it is here in the states, many people actually game professionally. so, i have no idea why laptops are coming out like that.

sweetas link mate
powernotebooks has the asus laptop for $1800
xtremenotebooks has the compal for $1730
that i can probably afford. hmmm...

Question:
how is the monitor of the ASUS vs the Compal???

i dont game and i still find it annoying some times
post #17 of 37
yup if u are a hardcore photoshop-er or a power user of the million other appz out there that make frequent use of the ctrl key, it sucks.
the aopen has a normal sized keyboard... all keys in right place like the CL/asus...

aopen also gets 5+ batt life i think

has 15" SXGA screen, prolly the exact same as cl56 interms of limited vertical viewing angles
post #19 of 37
using an external KB wouldn't produce the 2 keypress problem right?

i have actually suddenly leaned strongly towards the asus system which i can get for $1800
my problem is:
how is the monitor compared to the compal cl56
and what are its true specs? (weight, dimensions etc)
