beter viewin angles

mackol-

depending on the setup, the Asus has an option of widescreen, and I believe has a WXGA+ and the Compal has SXGA+, the Asus being better, more wide viewing angle

i dont want a Widescreen cuz when i program, i rarely have lines of code which go far sideways
i rather have a screen which has a higher lengthwise resolution.

so u would say that the sxga+ of the asus is better than the sxga+ of compal ay?
i think they are virtually the same...

What would scare me away from Mitac is the look I had at their websites. I looked at the Taiwan and the US website. The 8050 is nowhere to be found, nor are any manuals, drivers, utilities for it or hardly anything. I know that you can say it is new, but, if you are interested in an 8050, I suggest you check out their sites. I can generally get a decent idea of who I am dealing with by what their website looks like, and Mitac's is quite pitiful, unfortunately. It would make me worry about where any future support was coming from.

i tend to look beyond website ghettoness

i had a mitac8335... it was nicely packaged/built/branded... no where as representative as it was on the website

Thx for all the help rincewind. I'm goin for either cl56 or aopen1557, and at this point the deciding factor is battery life and build quality. I don't care about the differences in looks, as they are both good looking. How sturdy would you say your cl56 feels? Also, how long would you say your battery lasts for gaming? Not necessarily far cry or anything, but how long would it last playing something like ut 2k3?

still a little over 2 hours

maybe 2.5

the compal cl56 has a solid compact feel. if i press down on the plastic shell of the laptop it does not bend or flex or feel plasticy... (there is an aluminumum cage/frame underneath it to make it real stiff)

same goes w/ the keyboard does not bend or flex... the LCD backpanel does not feel as sturdy as the rest of the laptop (no cage/frame in it! )

how heavy is the laptop and what are its dimensions?
So what would you say the biggest downside to the cl56 is? Being the indecisive bastard that I am, I am still having trouble trying to decide between the aopen1557 and the cl56. Battery life is better on the aopen? That certainly complicates matters...

Also, whats this I hear about a second battery? That would certainly be a deciding factor.

Thanks for all your help!
That which you hear about a secondary battery, is that the CL 56 is supposed to get a modular bay battery some time in the future. I am guessing this would push the battery life of the unit upwards of 6 hours. According to Rince, the info regarding that battery came from a CD that came with the unit itself.

yep

also i have a icon in my taskbar that has "safely remove device" and it shows my cd/dvd drive

i can disable it then pop it out just like the asus for a 2nd battery

just need for them to release it
But as of now, would you say the 1557 gets better battery life?
it gets 5+ hrs
