Need thin & light graphics laptop with a very good screen....

Thread Starter
Lately I have been leaning towards buying the Compal CL56. If anyone has read my last post they know I will be using the laptop for my Animation Major at SJSU. Anyways, I have been reading the comments about the screen on the CL56 and im sorry to say I dont like the problems it has. I know that the screen cons may seem over rated, but I was wondering if there were any laptops out there that were similar to the CL56, but have a better screen? How about an awesome screen? I also have a few other questions:

1) Can you upgrade the graphics card on the Compal CL56?

2) Velocity Micro states that they dont use OEM parts for their notebooks, Is their Notemagix B50 (Compal CL56) better than the other ones out there? How is it versus the Hypersonic Aviator CX5 (also a compal cl56)?

3) Does anyone know of any stores near the San Jose, CA area that might carry the Compal CL56 notebook? I guess I really want to see the thing in real life before I decide to pass judgement.

4) Is it possible to swap the screen on the Compal CL56 for another one?

5) And finally can someone point me to a website that can explain to me what makes a desktop or laptop a good gaming pc? As in what to all these bench mark scores mean, comparison between a destop gamer pc and a laptop gamer pc, etc?

Thanks to everyone that helped me in my last post and to all that will help me in this one. Thanks.

I love the numbered responses, very professional.

swapping the screen on a laptop is a bad idea in general unless it's an identical model. I don't think anybody does that except the ODMs lol.

The GPN-CEN3 does have a better screen, but the GPU in the CL56 is 15-30% better.

EDIT: You will really only notice a difference though if you are a hardcore gamer or need hardcore graphics on maximum settings.

EDIT 2: Also, I believe the CEN3 is widescreen, not sure what that matters to you.

EDIT 3: The CEN3 is the Mitac 8050, with the ATI Radeon 9600 128MB gpu.

The CEN3 does indeed have a very nice screen. Even better than my Dell UXGA 1600x1200 which was made by hitachi.

As for the GPU how is it 15-30% better? Its the same video card and both are at stock speeds. Rincewind has a compal and he gets 3 fps more than me in Unreal 2004.

at gamepc.com, the mitac 8050 is listed as having a 9600 128mb, i was saying the 9700 is 15-30% better than the 9600

Haha I see, they still haven['t updated it. Out of 4 vendors that offered the Mitac they were the first to have the ati 9700 actually.

Really? Hmmmmm...I thought it seemed a bit odd for them to still be offering the 8050 with the 9600, considering every other place I have seen it has the 9700. Thanks for clearing that up ungcas

Thanks for all the replies guys. Anyone know of any websites that explain the benchmarks everyone uses here to rate their gamer pc's? Im a total rookie.

xnote lm50

Someone on this board recently discovered a store in Canada that stocks the elusive IBM LG XNOTE LM50, which until recently was a Korea and Australia only product. Had I not just purchased a toshiba r100, I'd almost certainly have bought one.

you can see it here

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?minorcatid=1006

basically its a 5.5lb centrino system with a radeon 9600 and what's reputed to be an inredible sxga+ screen. There is a newer version in Korea with a radeon 9700 and a UXGA screen which you could inquire about with the folks at this site.

Do a search on this site for xnote lm50 and you'll see some impressions, all of which I recall being quite positive.

yeah I think the thing is that the Acer and the CL56 both use the same screen as the LG lol but i can't confirm that.

I think they're different screens

I am almost positive the screens on the acer/cl56 nand the lg xnote lm50 are entirely different.

The various impressions posted on the net indicate the LG screen is extremely wide viewing angle from all directions, something I havent read about for the acer or cl56 anywhere.

hmmmm it might be worthwhile to chcek out...I don't know if ncix will have a demo in-store on june 15th, but if they do, I will go check it out and compare to the Acer Ferrari at another retailer. So i guess we will see

guys If you hit customize at the game pc site for the 8050, there is the option to get the 9700 w/128M for an additional $180.

easy peasy
