Nothing worst than to find a friends computer with 8 spyware programs running, 3 toolbars, and 5 pop-up every time a web page is displayed. I begin to do the clean up, and they tell me "I tried fixing it myself by downloading programs to remove it". I ask what programs, but they can't remember, and it is inot in add/remove programs. where did you get the program? "I clicked on this link in one of the pop-ups."

Spyware industry, and I feel that it already is an industry is getting aggressive with their tactics.

i would consider 1/2 of them viruses, not spyware... since they cause malicous things... such as eating up system resources.

spyware blaster ive found is pretty good as well, although it doesnt remove spyware, it blocks nearly 3000 different spyware programs from downloading to your computer. Ive found that it reduces my weekly finds from about 15 down to 0-1. www.javacoolsoftware.com
And no spyware inside either!!

spysweeper is good too, i did not see it on the list... it usually finds a program or two that adaware and spybot missed.

Something to add to the thread

Ad Aware
Spybot
Spyware Blaster
Pest Patrol

No computer should be without those programs

eAnthology should be on that list of bad programs

I have SpyHunter and it catches EVERYTHING never had a problem with it
my freind has Search and Destroy and my program found things that it didnt
post #11 of 37
SpyHunter is cool. I remember playing it back in the day. Did you hear they are making a SpyHunter movie staring The Rock?
AdDestroyer is also one that should be added to the list. it's an automatic download to your system that puts adware on your system.

Spysweeper works the best IMO.
spysweeper = resourse stealer.

Cannot go wrong with.

Spybot Search & Destroy
Spyware Blaster
Spyware Guard

aren't they in the process of making a law about "spyware"

I remember about a year ago spyware wasn't a common word, if it at all existed. Now even people who know nothing about computers know the term "spyware"

It's out of hand

Its going the same way Spam went.

spyware alone isnt dangerouse. Its the computer users being told its dangerouse. Even spyware scanners they pick up cookies!!?! a cookie CANNOT be spyware.

spyware also cannot damage your pc it can slow it down and cause it to error but unlike a virus once its gone your system goes back to normal.

Pass a bill to castrate the programmer who made it.

Print out all the lines of code and make the programmer eat it.

Lets see what pops up after that!

untrue.
I work in a computer repair shop, and the most common cause for people bringing their machines in is spyware. Spyware can not only steal system resourses, but corrupt your winsock files, and make it impossible for you to browse the internet. Spybot WAS an awesome program, not only did it remove but it BLOCKED thousands of bad products. but the college kid who wrote it, isnt making updates for it anymore, or the automatic update feature is broken, so we use ad-aware and that seems to work just fine. the new version of ad-aware even fixes some browser hijacks, where your home page is changed without your permission.

Dude, I work on spyware infected computers all the time. No they do not damage the system, but there are some nasty ones like VX2 out there that burrow into windows and are a pain in the a** to get rid of. If you don't dig deep into windows and remove every trace of it, it re installs itself after the system is rebooted.

I stand corrected. I just downloaded the latest version of spybot, and it updates just fine. I had an older version before and updates were always sluggish, and depended on if there was bandwidth available on his update server. It was not working for the longest time, so I quit using it. Good to see it's up and running again, Spybot is an awesome program. It has blocking, AND scheduling, all in a FREE tool!
