Disapearring Samsung X30 and P30 on ebay

post #1 of 19

Did anybody else browse ebay last night and see those Samsung X30's & P30's, IBM T41's, Powerbook G4's, HP's, Toshiba's for sale by a seller named opticalwindow.

All hi-end notebooks up for 24 hour auction with an opening price of $450 each - probably about 30 of them. Last night they were there and this morning they're gone. Tried to go to the item pages, and got error messages from ebay stating that either the item hasn't been listed yet or is no longer in ebay's database - Completely Gone.

I'm pretty sure it was a scam, so watchout. I tried to send a message to the seller via ebay, but my messages to ebay members through ebays built-in messaging system haven't gotten to them for weeks. I was forced to use the email address the seller gave in the item description - sales@elltrade.com, and send a message to them through my email client.

Below is a response from an inquiry I sent to opticalwindow/Elltrade. Sounds like opticalwindows was hijacked by these Elltrade b****rds.

Didn't you see p-p-p-powerbook?

A fake escrow site run by the scammer is how that scam operated.

I can guarantee you he wouldn't let you use the ebay recommended escrow site.

Scammers on ebay piss me off to no end. not only do they hurt the people who fall for them, they hurt us honest sellers on ebay too. In 1997-1998 ebay was a great place to sell used items. Now, it seems there is so much scamming going on that people don't bid as much as they would because people are worried about getting ripped off.

Well I live in Calexico, and the zip code is 92231 not 92232. Anyways, I looked up the name in the phone book and nobody by the last name of Dimas. The thing is Calexico is right next to the border (mexicali, Mexico) and I am guessing maybe this scam operation is being run from there.

It probably isn't even their real name.

BTW, I have just secured a deal to buy a Samsung P30 for $650 and a 17" Powerbook G4 for $1000! Both brand new, unopened box with warranty! I'll order some for you guys too! Just send me your money, and I'll get right on that! I'll make a bulk order and get 'em for $100 a pop!

Seriously, Never heard of that p-p-p-powerbook before, But this scammer wants me to use trade-safe.org . The site looks fairly normal. A little unprofessional, but not too bad. There is a scrolling banner ad at the top, that looks pretty cheesy. Scottsdale for this one.

www.trade-safe.org is definitely a scam, using one of the oldest tricks in the book.
The Verisign verification link opens up a page hosted locally on the scammer's site, not a true Verisign page.
HTML Code:
function verisign() {
day = new Date();
id = day.getTime();
eval("page" + id + " = window.open('VeriSign.php', '" + id + "', 'toolbar=0,scrollbars=1,location=0,statusbar=1,menubar=0,resizable=0,width=600,height=400,left = 50,top = 50');");
}
A JavaScript function forces the status bar to display a Verisign address when one mouse-over the verisign logo, thus fooling the visiter into thinking the site is verified by verisign.
HTML Code:
<A href="javascript:parent.status='https://digitalid.verisign.com/as2/17a4dd7522b645dd846b6129224acc13'; verisign();" onmouseover="javascript:parent.status='https://digitalid.verisign.com/as2/17a4dd7522b645dd846b6129224acc13'; return(true);"> <IMG alt="Click to verify" src="img/verisign.gif" border=0></A>
This is the actual verisign page linked by the versign logo, hosted locally by the site: http://www.trade-safe.org/VeriSign.php

u know, funny thing.....i was on ebay last night looking for a small case for my laptop on ebay....looked up 'sony srx99' and guess what i saw............15-20 auctions for sony srx99 systems with starting bids @ $1. the seller said to contact them first b4 bidding and the auction was for 7 days. this morning when i went back to look for them, its all gone. another scammer!

ebay is a bad place to buy in general if you're buying from anybody without the 500 dollar protection (and even if they do, anything over 500 dollars is just bad). I guess your credit card will cover you, but you only get 2 of those incidents a year or something, so it's not worth taking the unecessary risk for big ticket items.

Nice analysis of the source code, deltawalkerl

Sounds like the same experience, dt34. Did you get the seller's name or, more importantly, the email address you were supposed to contact them at?

The ebay seller who was supposedly selling these laptops went by the id of opticalwindow. The seller had only sold eye glasses in the past, but had a good feedback rating. Then all of a sudden, he was selling 30 laptops, each 24 hour auctions ending at the same time. Obviously, elltrade had hijacked his ebay account. Something to watch out for.

Wrong. I've bought and sold plenty of laptops on ebay. The fact that this particular deal was pulled says all you need to know about it. I've seen a TON of these "deals" where a seller with no feedback posts multiple listings for an absurdly low price as well. They have all been pulled. Anyone who does their homework won't have a problem on ebay. On a tangent, where else would a person go to find a used one? A FS/FT forum? Sure I've bought stuff off of random forums but if that's considered "safer" than I've got a bridge I wanna sell yah...
post #17 of 19
yes but accounts get hacked...somebody with a great reputation could get their password hacked...and then what? You get screwed.

edit: admittedly, doing your research does help, but for big ticket items I would still shy away from ebay.
post #18 of 19
hmm well I have never actually sold anything on ebay so I wouldn't have any feedback... Should I just not even consider selling my Mitac 8050 on ebay next year? Seems I will instantly not be trusted by the majority of people with my no feedback .
post #19 of 19
Well, if you spellcheck everything, provide good pictures, and accept paypal, quite a lot of people will bid.
