I have this memory installed in my Inspiron 14R. 6gb (one 2gb & one 4gb). Great performance! I highly recommend Kingston.

me too!
Me Too! from what i understand the pcmcia and acpi are the real problem causers, and the Feature list for Vector Linux claims it supports those options. Maybe vector would be a good place start?I want to run some form of *nix on my 8887 when i get it (plan to order it tomorrow) but the more i read here on the forums, the more i realize that doing it myself is way beyond my abilities right now. I whole-heartedly look forward to a "Sagerlinux!!!"

I just installed Vector Linux on my old 166Mhz DEC and it's a little too preconfigured for my tastes.
Pros:
Sets up Fast(40 min)
Almost Point and click
Runs fast even on my 166Mhz
Cons:
Can't choose packages during install
Can't choose WM during install (ICEWM XFE default)
Currently have to boot with CD as I'm getting a nasty error about my filesystem
There is a package manager program. I tried it, it doesn't seem to do anything.

Vector Linux
It is slack based and the devel has been slow if not frozen lately. Could be a good base.myrkat:
Pressure, Pressure....It is on the way, but i took the long road. I am designing a com0plete custom distro with gui. I made my own partitionner ( using glade gtk2.0 based ), have the package manager in ncurses and have got good scripts tuned up.
It will give you choice in configuration, packages and able to tweak it depending if ya own a 888X or a 56XX. Been fairly busy. It will be there soon, if only the ati final drivers for X 4.3.X will come out soon......Beta ones are not worth putting on a distro.
Till soon...

Oh that's sweet! I can hardly wait (and I'll bet quite a few others would be interested, too!).

Synaptics, TTF and the goodies.
So far :-Synaptic touchpad drivers are included now with XFree 4.3.0. So they don't need installing anymore as a separate package.
- I have included TTF support either through freetype2 or throught xtt. Off course that includes anti-aliasing as well.
- Distro is based atm on 2.4.21-pre7 kernel / acpi-patch 2.4.21-pre7 and 2.4.21 preempt kernel patch. The majority of all devices will be built as modules and with an autoclean function ( Yep autoclean, will unload the module after an idle time not to use to much memory ). I choose that approach cause considering the Alsa sound system is very modular, on my 5660, a lsmod as root fills the console. I mean we do need lots of modules and even more on the 888X considering the mp3 player/Smartcard reader and TV tuner.
- The most important packages are built from sources on my box and will be installed as binary from the cd ( XFree86, Gnome 2.3, sound ). Why ? Cause i did use optimisation for pentium 4 ( CFLAGS="-march=pentium4" ) and well, it limit the distro to pentium4 but really boost performance. gcc 3.2.3, unstable branch but the rest of the shipped binary are built with 3.2.
beakmyn, thanks for the offer, it is needed, as i don't have a 888X. I will post soon a iso on ftp, but as you guy read ( maybe ) my 5660 is on warranty return atm for 2 weeks. No other laptop, no way to get that hdd backep up somewhere to carry work. Hope it will be fast.
