Stop Errors

A few days ago I started getting BSODs as I was restarting my computer, so since it had been awhile since I'd formatted, I figured I'd just go ahead and do it today. I've been having problems ever since.

I got a BSOD on the Windows installation saying:
Windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

STOP: 0x000000D1
0x000001B0
0x00000002
0x00000000

USBPORT.SYS
Address: 0xF75705F0
Base: 0xF756C000
DateStamp: 3b7d868b

After restarting the installation, everything went ok. Installed all my Windows updates and reinstalled the drivers. Then all of a sudden my screen fades very slowly to black. Fearing I was about to damage the LCD, I powered the computer down. After turning it back on, everything was going ok for about 30min then I got the BSOD with the same DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error however no mention of USBPORT.SYS this time. I've gotten a few more as well.

M$ Knowledge Base (and I'm going to continue looking into this after typing this) says that this is generally due to a faulty driver. However, I hadn't installed any drivers when I first got the error during the install (at least none that Windows wasn't doing on its own). Plus, I've reformatted plenty of times before and never had this happen and the BSODS on restart seem kinda fishy which had just started popping up about a week ago.

Any ideas on what this could be? I imagine it's some sort of hardware fault, but I have no clue what it would be other than perhaps the USB controller. I haven't plugged in any hardware of yet (but am about to) as I like to install with as little connected as possible. Should I just send the laptop in to Sager?

Laptop Info:
8887
128MB ATI
1GB RAM
P4 2.66GHz

Try testing your memory. Then remove on stick and see what happen. Then the other stick and see what happens. Then swap the sticks from their original locations and see what happens.

Well, I just did about an hours worth of memory testing (that memtest86 program). All tests passed. No errors. Is there a better way than just waiting around for my memory to fail? Is there anything I can do to induce a memory failure assuming faulty RAM? Right now I've got both sticks in, and I haven't crashed yet. I'm not sure how long to go before I consider the current RAM installed in the system to be faultless. :-/

I have that error a lot too. It is caused by many firewalls. I had it a lot when I used Keiro firewall and I still have it sometimes with Sygate.

i don't run any firewalls :-/

Like I said, please turn off your firewall and see if that helps. It's the exact same error I get with mine.

Well, now when I went to install my USB soundcard, it screws up. It installs fine. All the diagnostics (it's an Audigy NX) come out ok. That USBPORT.SYS comes to mind, but I've been reading files from my USB2.0 HDD fine (albeit I've only been installing small programs from it). I'm about to replace the RAM and see if that magically fixes the sound problem. If it does, I imagine it will be obvious it's the RAM. If not, I have no clue of what to do now. :-/

The full diagnostic requires approximately 5.5-6.5 hours to complete (depends greatly on machine specifications). Best to leave it run overnight, whilst sleeping. The test is quite thorough, and will usually (though not always) track down any memory related errors.

Certainly could be a memory issue here.

Oh wow. Ok. Will definitely do that then. I'll check back in the morning

No go. No errors detected in RAM :-/ I have no clue what's wrong with it now.

Well, I've emailed Sager (wonder if I should have mailed PCTorque instead since that's where I got it from). I of course am waiting till the business week starts up again to expect a mail back.

As of now, the OS won't load (I get a Stop Error 0x0000000A DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL consistently now) unless I either:
a. load into safe mode
b. schedule a chkdsk... sometimes it doesn't even run... but that seems to appease the demon for some reason and allow the OS to load normally. (Windows XP Prof)

So it works everytime you load using safe mode ?
Did you turn Hyperthreading off or on in the BIOS ?

Yes. I can successfully load into safe mode everytime (at least so far). I don't have a hyperthreaded processor. I have the 2.66P4. :-/

Most likely a device is not working properly in the higher functions. Since you reformated after the problem started it is most likely not Windows or a Driver. Or maybe a strange HDD error. I bet the one year is up so I hope you have the 3 year extended one.

i did a hdd scan and didn't see anything. Did the full scan for bad sectors and all. It really sucks :-/

Yah, the year is up, and I doubt I got the extended warantee. Not that I'd be able to find it if I did anyways...
