noise canceling

I found that all round great head phones are:

Sony Noise Canceling MDR-NC20. These are by far my most versatile and favorite head phones for my pocket pc, sager and gaming. Great on the subway because it blocks out all the noise and a dream on the airplane. And they fold up nice and compact.

Then again, there are probably better ones out there.

I use noise canceling Sonys at work (MDR-7506; a couple of years old), which are pretty good. They were some 120 euros without VAT - not too expensive I think.

If you were asking for ~$60 I would say Sennheiser's HD-212's. I own them and they kick ass for music.

Check out head-fi.org

Beware of that site though - after joining I have bought, Grado Sr60, sr80, sennheiser px200, koss ksc-50, shure e2c, and sony ex71. The Grado sr80's sounded the best, but they leaked too much noise. I found the e2cs to be uncomfortable, but I have very small ears. in the end I wound up sticking with the sony ex71's. They are chea ($40 on buy.com) very comfortable, and they cancel out like 25db of noise, so theyre great for the bus and flights. The sound is very good (especially with EQ adjustment), but it doesnt touch that of the grados.

If you dont care about leakage, the Grado SR60s are unquestionably the best value for your money.

I have the Sony MDR-7506 and they are not noise cancelling! They are closed back which seals off noise to some degree.

For audiophile headphones check out Sennheiser http://www.sennheiserusa.com/newsite...ransid=USHD650

but they are open back and high impedance. They will work with a modern home theater receiver fine but for portable devices or a computer you would need an amplifier.

Noise cancelling phones contort the cones and distort the sound. Check out these guys http://www.etymotic.com/ if you want to filter out noise. Their ear bud phones double as earplugs. There are other manufacturers that make cheap imitations of their products but Etymotics is the real deal. They make both high and low impedance variations.

Oh, that's news to me. They block outside noise so well that I thought they were noise canceling.
