Sager 5690 After one week

Thread Starter
I've had my 5690 for a week now.
I'm very impressed with it.
Loadout:
2.8Ghz P4'
512MB RAM
60GB 5400 HD
SXGA+ screen
Netgear PCMCIA WLAN
'doze XP
Antec Cooling pad w/ reversed fans
maxfa/mobmeter.

I put this laptop through it's paces for serveral days, UT2004 in maximum detail mode @ 1400x1050 (much preferred to the UXGA's 1600x1200), was ~50FPS, turning evrything to normal yielded ~ 80 FPS (blows my Ti4200 @ 1024x768 same details out of the water).

The screen itself is nice, better than many laptop screens I've seen, the "low" view angle isn't noticible, in fact, it's a good thing, as at LAN parties, it's good that the guy next to you can't see what you're doing <g>

with 512MB of RAM, it's good enough to run anything I can throw at it, though the load times stink... the gig wasn't worth the money just yet.

Heat:
47C idle on the pad (pad off, internal fans off)
51 C w/o pad
with pad on + fans on, idle = 32C :-)
The pad also helps raise it up, considering i'm using an external keyboard (IBM Model M, that takes a beating), it helps with visibility.

Battery Life:
I didn't buy the 2nd battery off the bat (this was bought on a budget of $1700), so the uptime on battery really sucks, not that it matters, it's 'dug in' 90% of the time.

My only complaint thusfar is that the DVD playback won't work on the external display unless i turn off the panel :-( all I get is a blank screen, anyone know any fixes?

This is true of any mobile machine I have ever owned (and that is a number of them). Most likely a limitation in the way mobile video cards (both discrete and integrated alike) function. Will be true both in the use of external monitor out, as well TV out.

There is no fix (so to speak) as it is not an error, but simply a design limitation across the entire notebook market.

Sorry to be the bearer of unfortunate news.

As for your one complaint, try using various other drivers. You can get the video to work on a television but for some odd reason some drivers result in the black screen whereas other drivers will work fine. (and some drivers will give you you the opposite effect.)

I use my laptop a lot for connecting to televisions to play dvds, .avis, dvx, mpegs (indeed, it was one of the important features of the laptop). On my 5690 if you install the Omega drivers you'll get that effect (image on the screen), but if you use the default drivers provided with the laptop then you should solve your problem. You will get video (and audio if you hook that up as well) however you won't get subtitles for some odd reason (I don't know why).

I believe Omega removes Hydravision from the drivers when he modifies them. Hydravision is the multi-monitor/display software for Catalyst drivers.

That might not be exactly why it happens, but it might be worth investigating. Omega has links to download Hydravision seperately on his driver download page, as well.

I think the problem with the display is the "clone mode". I used "extended mode" in a 5680 and it worked for me. If you try to see the same on the LCD and TV, you will have a problem if your TV cannot handle the high LCD resolution. For quick test, use 800x600 and try.

External monitor dvd works fine for me. Make sure it's set to extended desktop, then in the displays properties, make your TV or whatever your display #1 (primary). You'll see your task bar move to the external display, and you should be able to view DVDs

strange.
In clone mode, everything works. In extended mode, I get black screen on the external display in the DVD window.

Also:
In clone mode, the DVD displays in a window on the panel and Fullscreen on the external :-) can even minimize the player on the panel and everything works :-)
