Looking for notebook, for less than $1300

Well I have put a few months of work into looking for a notebook, a few key things I have come to conclude that I need are:

1.4GHz (or better) Pentium M Processor (even better if it can be upgraded later if needed)
512 DDR Ram (or more)
15.4 In. Display
Wireless connection (would perfer b/g, but b only is fine)
Radeon mobility 9200 (or NVIDIA equivalent) or higher (even better if it can be upgraded later if needed)
HDD 35+ gig (would be nice to have something higher than 4200, but for this price I understand)
1 year or better warrantee

All this for under $1300 (would be nice if it included shipping, but this can be haggled with) And any with rebates that wqill bring them down to this price range. But it must be under 1300 with tax, im only willing to go slightly over with shipping.

I am a college student in texas if this helps find a student rebate.

I’ve looked for a few weeks for something that hits these specs is:

Acer Aspire 2001LCI ($1,246.78 shipped from J&R Music and Computer World)

Now I know there has to be more than this one machine to hit these specs. Can anyone help me out on this? I may be buying in 1-3 weeks, if that helps any.

You can get a laptop from Internetisshop.com that is configured with:

1) Pentium M 1.5 Ghz
2) 1024 MB PC2700 memory
3) 80GB Ultra ATA hard drive
4) ATI Mobility M9 64MB VRAM
5) DVD+CDRW Combo Drive
6) Mini PCI Wireless LAN Card (I suppose it's only 802.11b)
7) 15.1" XGA TFT LCD Monitor

The only thing that does not fit your specifications is the monitor, but it's off by only .3". Everything else is better than what you are looking for. By the way, here is the link: 551C15S laptop

It looks good, but what kind of quality can I expect?

You will have to ask another forum member that has experience with Internetisshop.com laptops. I know there are a few people...

i just realized that, that one isnt up to par because of the ATI M9... that would be the mobility 9000 if it serves me correct.

I would love to hear any more suggestions one might have.

It could be worth checking into. The Mobility 9200 is the M9+, or the M9P. It was basically a higher clocked version of the Mobility 9000, and was released right around the same time as the Mobility 9600, the M10. I've seen M9 and 9200 used interchangeably, so that might actually be the 9200.

Well ok, a 15 inch or higher is fine (must display higher than 1024 x 768), i guess the 15.4 limits it?

If I had 1400 I could build a labtop with no big deal, there has to be a company or someone around here that can fit to this price range. I would go the ebay route, but im seeing more rip offs than deals. And to add to that, ive never bought from ebay before.

Please let me know what you guys find out. Im a college student so all I have is 1300 bucks. I may beable to borrow some for shipping. But this is my cash, ive saved it by eating soup for the past one and a half year years.

I never thought I would get tired of Maruchan Ramen Noodle Soup Thus why I cant save any more cash for this, I want the finer things in life such as lunch meat

Ill be checking in every so often to see if anything has been found, I must thank you for the responces so far.

haha, i hear you on the poor college student deal.
i have heard good things about the emachines 6809/6804, some people were able great deals on it (~$1200). it is an a64 proc though, while very fast i guess maybe you are looking for more batt life with the P-M
maybe a dell 600m? build quality isn't too great and neither is the video card, but it's light / portable and you can get a student discount

yeah, the amd 64 system can get you alot for your money, its just there stuck to the wall for most of the time. Unless i get facts saying they can last 3 hours or so, then I may be willing to go to that side.

I would also be willing to make it, but I cant find a place that sells the barebones cheap. Ive look at the asus M6 series and I can skirt away at 1360. Mainly because I cant find a good cheap place to get an intel P m. They seem to start at $200 for a 1.4

Like I said, im open to many ideas, to build a notebook would be interesting. But it would have to beat the GFX specs in order for it to be worth my wild. Ive never built one before, but ive built around 20 custom desktop PC's over the past few years. (I now know i should have charged more... sigh)

So I think with that kind of skill, and with forums like this, it would not be a problem. Its just another idea to consider.

Im still looking, but when it comes to making a custom labtop i only know of asus. So this has me stuck too.

hardtech, i've been looking for the best possible system i can recommend to my roommate for $1300 for a while now. since you seem to be pretty knowledgable about hardware i'll assume you're looking for the best specs you can possibly get, so i would really try to consider the mitac 8050 if i were you. this is the best looking / smallest size / best performing system i can find right now for under $1400:

Mitac 15.4" Centrino Notebook Computer, DVD/CDRW $1,319.00 $1,319.00
Display: 15.4" WXGA
CPU: PM 1.5Ghz
Memory: 256MB
HDD: 40GB 4200rpm $30.00 $30.00
CD: DVD/CDRW
Battery: Smart Li-Ion Battery
OS: None
Carry Bag: Included
Modem: 56K Modem
Network Adapter: add internal 802.11g Wireless LAN $45.00 $45.00
Total: $1,394.00

UPS ground shipping is free. It has the m11/128 Mb ram and the last stock bench i saw it got 2800 in 3dmark03 .

the CL50 suggestion is a really good option and it has 512 RAM, i just think that the GPU is an important part of the notebook so I tried to find the best one available at the lowest cost.

anyway, that's what i've been looking at. i figure he can upgrade the ram when he gets some more cash, and this will last him through grad school.

what texas univ are u at?

HardTech,

The Gateway 505x also has similar specs, down to a standalone multimedia player. Having received the 2001LCi this Friday, I have to put a vote in for it. The fit and finish are excellent, better than what I've seen of HP/Cpq, Sony, eMachines, etc. at the stores here. Sound so far is also excellent, however I haven't used it with too many types of music yet. At the least, it is at par with a $100 boombox, which is something for a notebook. With almost every notebook in this price range having the same checklist features, these are the kinds of things you'll have to make your selection on. It does seem a little heavier than the claimed 6.6lb, but I don't know how a box of that size can be lighter. I'll be testing it out some more over the next few days, so ask away of you have more questions!

I was really looking for a similar machine, but with an Athlon64, but nothing like that out there.
