Asus M6N WSXGA info

Hey, I know some of you are interested if the WSXGA will ever show up on the Asus M6BN in the US(well at least I was), so I talked to the people at proportable and asked about the availability of the ATI 9700 64MB for the new models and the WSXGA screens. They said the M6Ne's will be available tomorrow(Monday) and the WSXGA may, if ever, be available next month. Apparently it all depends on how fast Samsung makes the LCD's, because right now all the 15.4 WSXGA's are being put in powerbooks and W1's. Also, they apparently don't see a problem in the 15.1 SXGA+ that many users see or don't want to mention it. I'll put a copy of the reply below. Hope this helps.

Rahul,

The 9700's will start selling on Monday, however the higher resolution screen may or may not ever get on the M6n...... If it does, we're looking at mid July before it appears.

The wsxga is going to cost $80-$100 more than the wxga. The benefits of widescreen are yet to be seen, really. You gain 1/2" of width, but lose 1" of height..... technically the widescreens are smaller. A 15.4" lcd has the height of a 14" lcd screen. I think thats the best way to explain it. Widescreens are really only good for those who do a lot of horizontal scrolling.

Personally, I thought I'd want the widescreen, but I like the 15.1" better. You can get the 15.1" at SXGA+ for $20 less than the 15.4" WXGA and $100-$120 cheaper than what will be a 15.4" wsxga.

I hope that helps.

Sincerely,

Thats basically what Justin told me, so I got a 15.1... however my friend got a 15.4" and after seeing both, I'd go with the 15.1 too.

Now, the W1's screen with the higher res does make things a lot easier to use at 15.4", but my friend has video and music editting... so the widescreen does work to his advantage.

so the 15.1 worked out for you, that's good confirmation news because I've pretty much decided on it: I don't really need the horizontal space for editing or anything and don't mind not having so much vertical angle, I just want space and good resolution and a good, bright screen.

right now I think some people like the widescreen, some don't. I think there are more people who just don't know better and got a widescreen without looking at a 15.1" for comparison. Most are also probably coming from older machines which may make the wxga on the 15.4" look really good compared to what they had.

a 15.4" widescreen basically has the height of a 14"...... so if you do a lot of vertical scrolling, you're going to miss that height... to each their own.

do you have any problems with varying color gradients up and down the screen. If you do, is it that noticeable or bothers you, because I'm not too picky and don't know if this problem thats bothering other people would bother me too.

Not that I notice. I've asked other customers of proportable and they haven't had the problem. However there are issues with some people on this forums, I know that.. The issue is because Asus used two lcd companies and their screens are slightly different. I think the problem is since resolved though, so I don't see you having a problem.

Hey MrBoston, I have a 15.1 sxga+ m6n and have noticed the gradient issue problem ever since I got my laptop in early February. I have a feeling since it was one of the first batch of m6n's in the US, the gradient issue is attributed to those early batch LCD's. Do you know the names of the two companies that ASUS used for the LCD's in the m6n?

I'd like to contact them to see some specific specifications/model numbers/etc on the LCD in my m6n.

Thanks.

Orb,

I don't know off the top of my head. I know Justin over at proportable told me specifically why they never got any....... I think it was something like samsung and phillips, or something like that. You may want to try to contact him.

Where did you get yours?

MrBoston,
I got mine from a small reseller in my area (bay area, CA). He was able to get me one with the config I wanted within a reasonable timeframe. I went with him instead of justin at proportable only because he was in my area and if anything went wrong I could just drive over to see him.
my config:
m6n 15.1 sxga+, 1.7P-M, 1GBDDR333, 60GB7200HD8MBCache, CDRW/DVD, XPpro

Thanks for the info about the LCD. I'm going to do a little research and try to verify the manufacturers.

wxga vs sxga on m6n

I'm still wafting about the wxga versus the sxga.. which to get. I've purchase the laptop but can change the screen if needed. I've experienced the wide on another laptop and actually like it, and for music editing it is good...but the increased resolution of the 15.1 could be a benefit when dealing with graphic editing, which I also do. Also, is the 15.1 a small package? I have not seen one of these. I know this is an old thread but if anyone has any new advice here...it would be appreciated.

I personally hate the life out of widescreen, mostly because it was initially invented for movie theaters, but because of the ignorant masses, widescreen has proliferated and become common. It's hard to find a fullscreen version of DVDs these days, many don't even offer a fullscreen version anymore.

That is of course not to say that widescreen is bad, but it has its place, and it isn't on a computer, especially a laptop, in my opinion.
