Enabling CD-Rom Locks Computer

i recieved a replacement drive for my notebook, but whenever i try to enable it, it will lock my computer. i have to keep it disabled, otherwise when i try to boot into anything except plain safe mode, it will lock on the splash screen. after disabling in safe mode, and rebooting into normal mode, i try to uninstall and re-enable it, but my machine will lock up. can i replace the windows cd-rom drivers?

I would check to see if it is being properly identified in the BIOS first. If it does not show properly in the BIOS, I would check to see if the drive's jumpers are set right

If it shows up OK in BIOS, you could try to uninstall it from control panel in safe mode. Once the computer boots to Win XP, it should detect new hardware and install the drivers for the CD drive.

it's recognized in bios correctly, and i'm able to boot from the cd-rom. even if i uninstall the drive in safe mode, and reboot, it will lock up. i must then disable the drive in safe mode to be able to boot in normal mode.

there are no jumpers on the drive. it locks in win xp when it comes to enabling the drive.

Hmm... Maybe you could boot to safe mode and uninstall the entire IDE adapter. That would force XP to reload the controller and all drives attached to it.

In Device Manager on my 8886, it shows up as "Intel(r) 82801CAM Ultra ATA Storage Controller-248A"

Are you running Daemon tools? If so, temporarily uninstall it as it can cause some bizarre driver issues. Also, if you are running Alcohol 120%, temporarily uninstall that until the issue is resolved. Both of these create software drives that can interfere with the real drives, especially when trying to get them configured.

nope, the problem still persists. after uninstalling the ide drivers, it will redect them when i hit scan for changes, but during the cd-rom driver installation it will die.

i'm gonna try to make the drive hot swappable via a microsoft guide.

edit: nevermind, the guide was for win95

also, while in safe mode i was able to browse my cd-rom and saw an appropriate file on a cd-rom

the problem is crappy ass windows crashing on something as simple as cd-rom initialization

Maybe event viewer picked up something that can tell you what Windows is freaking out over.

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer - System.
