Which Sager to get tomorrow?

Ok, I've been quietly reading pretty much every post in this forum for about a week now. I'm in the market for a laptop. I originally wanted an Alienware, but as I was surfing those forums, someone mentioned Sager. Since then, I've come to see that Sager is definetly the way to go. My problem is that I can't decide on which one to get. The 8790 is nice with it's 17" screen. I also like the 5690. Even though it's got a smaller screen, it seems like it is right up there as far as performance. Like I've said, I've read pretty much every post in this forum. So I don't need any links to posts in this forum, cuz I've read them. Some people swear by the 5690, others the 8790. I'm ordering a laptop tomorrow one way or the other. I want to hear some good comparisons, based on experience hopefully, about what the best option would be for someone who plays quite a few games. I like stuff like Neverwinter Nights, Final Fantasy XI, etc. I've also got a massive desktop, so I'll only be playing games on the laptop when I'm not at home. So maybe once or twice a week. Money is not an issue, so just give me some good honest opinions on what you would buy if you were me. Thanks.

you should probably get the 5690 in your case. The 8790 has plenty of extras that you may not need and has less battery life.

How often will you cart it around? Do you plan on using it a lot without an outlet nearby?

My laptop sits on a desk 360 days a year. When I travel, and take it, I plug it in when I get to my destination. thus my choice was easy. The 8790 really is a desktop replacement.

If I was a student, going back and froth to school and home, and to various locations on a campus, or traveling with my laptop back and forth to work even, I would have gone with the lighter, more mobile 5690.

Either way, you can't go wrong.

Pretty much what LFK said. It's pretty much up to you on what you want out of a computer. For what requirements you've stated (ie- playing games 1~2x/wk), either one will fit your bill.

The main factor's going to be the screen. Do you want the widescreen (which is awesome, I may add) or the higher resolution of the 15"?

The 8790 does have RAID capability w/ its dual HDs if you need it. And an option for Bluetooth if you're interested in going wireless (my personal choice- wireless mouse. Love it!)

But really, if money's not an option, then buy both

Even though I have an 8790, I'd recommend the 5690. Mainly because of it's increased portability and the "Hot Swap" battery.

I've been reading a lot about the screens. Which screen is better? Does the smaller screen look better, while the larger screen sacrifices quality for size? I keep seeing conflicting reports. As far as carrying it around, I would probably have it around the house 95% of the time. I would only take it with me when I knew I would be somewhere there is a power outlet. Like a hotel, or staying with friends/family. My main reason for a laptop is so I can use my wireless LAN and surf the web and stuff while in bed or watching tv with the wife. She want's me to get it so I can set with her while surfing the web or playing a game. I HATE TV. I just can't decide if it's actually worth it to get the 8790 over the 5690. I wish I could see the screen in person before buying. Are there any other laptop brands that have the 17" screen that I could see locally, like at Best Buy or something?

The uxga screen on the 5690 is outstanding, with a little color tweaking.

HP has a 17" screen, I believe the identical one the 8790 will be using shortly (not yet)

Good point G, if I didn't have this 8600 for road trips I would have gone with the 5690 as well.
drawmonster-I was worried about which screen res too, I had the 8890 1280x1024 sxga & it was great, had it advantages. But the 1920x1200 wuxga is a great screen too- sharp as hell if you have 20/20 vision. 1 year later I had to purchase my first pair of glasses. I use them when I'm on this 8600 The 5690 (1600x1200) is nice!
Good Luck

I wouldn't think of the 8790 as sacrificing quality for size. It's an apples to oranges type deal to me. They're both very nice- they just have different resolutions.

Personally, I think my 17" 1440x900 screen is great. I'd love to step up to an WSXGA model, but that's not going to happen. If there was an option for WUXGA, I'm not so sure I'd go for that or not. That'd be pretty darn small.

You might want to go find somewhere that carries Apple Powerbooks (or whatever they're called). The Apple 17" screens are the same as the Sagers.

The apple screens are a bit brighter because they have two backlights. But all in all - I'll agree with FT -- go check it out (it's actually real nice).
