PC now freezes randomly...

Hi gang, hope you can help me fix this...

I installed the latest ATI drivers from Sager (Catalyst 3.2) and DX9a last Friday.

Since then I've been experiencing randow freezes (PC stops responding, needs hard shutdown & reboot). It's been happening in internet explorer, ERP application, and many many times in Medal of Honor...

I'm going to restore to DX8.1 & the other drivers, but can you explain this ???

thanks.

i've been looking for a solution to this problem also. i'm currently running ATI 3.2 and DX 8.1 and i am still having the freezing in Battlefield 1942

Unfortunately, there is no UNINSTALL for DirectX - not cleanly nor completely, at any rate.

Most people opt for a re-format/re-install of everything, unfortunately. It is always mentioned to make an image or other system backup prior to updating video and/or directX, but no one ever does, do they?

Same problem...

Its not DX9.0a or the Cat drivers...

Do you have Jaba Web Start or Java Runtime Environment installed?

Did you do any Windows upgrades recently??

I have DX9.0a and the CAT 3.2 and so do many other users - its some other software thats causing the problem...

I have a feeling you did a windows update or installed Java or ...

None of the above ...

I do not have a Java thing nor did I ever run autoupdate. I did, however, create a restore point prior to installing DX90a !

I'll see what happens ... I am now at DX81 with the original video drivers (6218).

My guess is that it's going to freeze again but

Wait a sec... I also installed Avant Browser, and it just did something funny on me (memory violation)...

I'll also uninstall the s***er

HEY!!!

Did you get a

memory error 0090xE82400 could not reference memory

something error??

Thats what I got with the old version of Java and the crashing started in IE. New version installed - no more crashing!

Check it out...

Problem solved ? NOT !

My PC hasn't froze since I went back to DX81, old ATI drivers and uninstalled Avant Browser...

I'll try reinstalling DX9a and the new drivers and see ...

Funny thing... I called Eurocom support yesterday to ask about my problem... The guy said it was the first time he heard abou DX9 ... Said he didn't think it was out yet

UPDATE: My PC froze just seconds after posting this

I reinstalled XP, hope it helps...

when it freezes does the machine lockup and you have to hold the power button down for 5 seconds to reboot? that is what i have to do. does it freeze in any games you play>]?

Yeah I get BSOD (followed by reboot) running avant browser sometimes after I installed the HT Bios...

Once in a greater while I do get a lock-up... though since it ran rock solid at some point in the past, I assume it is software....

Exactly ! It froze twice in MOHAA the other night... The bummer is that I'm a freelance developper and I also use this lappy at work. It froze on me about 4 times Monday while running data conversions that had to be redone, of course

For what it's worth, I had the exact same problem, i.e. machine freezing on me all of a sudden, mostly in games. I had Catalyst 3.2 plus DX 9.0a in XP Pro, with HT enabled.

I reinstalled everything, minus HT (meaning a full windows reinstall, not a repair), and am now running Catalyst 3.2 and DX9, and things seem to be perfect... I haven't had a single freeze since. I guess DX9 is still very touchy right now when it comes to HT. I hope they get this resolved soon, but I'm not holding my breath...

Crap, I hope I don't have to REINSTALL to get rid of DX9.0a... that would suck.

The ONLY problem/game is FREELANCER. Everything else plays just fine on my HT-enabled, WinXPpro, 9.0a machine.

I don't think I have the 3.2 cat drivers (I used whatever the latest driver is on Sager's site).

myrkat, have you played Command & Conquer Generals for any length of time on your 9.0a HT machine? If yes, then I'm baffled because that was one of the main culprit re freezing on my machine (I think Impossible Creatures froze on me once or twice too). This would then boil down to Catalyst 3.2, which would be I guess somewhat conforting news, since the original drivers are very good anyway. Let us know...

Sorry, don't have that game and have not played it...

I've heard it so much that I may need to grab a copy.

A long time ago Microsoft put out a new directx version (I think it was 6) and suddenly a lot of games that had been working developed problems (freezing, BSOD). Microsoft did fix the situation but it took them around half a year (and another DX version). I suspect that the current problem is the same. I find that almost all of my MS games are locking up (Dungeon Siege, Freelancer, Impossible Creatures). Other games work flawlessly (Warcraft 3, UT2003, UT, Half-Life, Starcraft, Diablo 2, Quake 3, Freedom Force). MS is aware of the problem (It seems to be their number one issue and it seems to affect a lot of their games). I only hope that MS fixes their stuff soon.

me too...

I have a brand new 8887 3.06+HT with WinXP Pro + SP + hotfixes + DirectX 9 + all drivers direct from sager site. It has frozen up solid at least 10 times since I got it a week ago. It locks up at random times. I don't believe that it has anything to do with the drivers being used in my case, because it has also locked solid twice at an idle debian linux prompt.

Anyone have any suggestions?..

It's getting terribly frustrating..

And before anyone asks.. power management is disabled while the laptop is plugged in. (always on)

Just did a fresh install of XP w/sp1 and all patches except DX9 and I am getting the BSoD still. Had no problems until I installed the new drivers from Sager's site. I am going to back step drivers and see if that works...
I also added 512MB of ram recently, but that was a few days before the driver update and crashing issues. I also ran a thorough ram test and it was clean. At this point, everything points to the new drivers.
