PC now freezes randomly... - Page 2

Which drivers do you want?

I have all the sager drivers with me. Just tell me the driver number and I will send it to PC Torque and ask them to put it up for download on their server.

Actually I will ask them to create a catalogue of all drivers and software that we think is useful...that will be awesome...

Think it was just the catalyst 3.1, worked fine.

ATI website...

You should be able to get those drivers at the ATI website...

www.ati.com

look in the drivers section...

faded. i am in the exact same situation. brand new machine. and i have tryed all driver combinations possible dx9 with cat3.2, cat3.1, sager cd drivers, sager site drivers. and the above combo with dx8.1 after winxp PRO reinstall. all freeze in games after about 5 - 20 minutes. once got a bsod but it went away so fast cause the machine autorebooted. wish i could see what it was!

I've been playing MOHAA and expansion pack Spearhead, with Open GL and Direct 3D set for highest quality, I also had been getting freezes when in the game. Set display properties back to default and have had no problem. I've been using the latest drivers posted on Sager's website, I believe 4/14/03 ATI784.

random freezes

I had a few freezes on my first install. After a reinstall with my drivers worked out, I have not had any random freezes. A few reboots and bsods due to 3d test apps I have, but unreal tournament runs fine. I have left the lappy on for 12+ hours with out issue ofer the last few days.

I installed the following drivers in the following order:

winxp pro
sp1a(microsoft)
chipset drivers (5.5?) - newest off intels site
directx 9a - newest off microsofts site
intel application accelerator 2.2
no usb drivers!
audio drivers (sager)
ati 7.84
lan(sager)
modem (sager)
hot-key (sager)
TOUCHPAD 7.2.5 (SAGER)
memory stick
wireless lan
tv turner drivers (new ones from sager)
them my normal apps.

It seems to be running great for 3 days now. I disabled the bios power management due to the machine hanging to about 1 sec every minute or so. Cleared that up but the fans never shut off.

My system specs are:
8887-V
1GB RAM
3.o6GHz w/HT
DUAL 6oGB
DVD/CDRW
mp3
TV-Tuner

The BIOS is 3.5a.128? i think, pretty sure.

The Catalyst 3.1 drivers are still doing the same thing. So I removed the 512MB of ram I added and now it is working flawlessly again. I bought 512MB PC2100 DDR SODIMM 266MHz (Hyperspeed), so apparently this isn't compatible? DOS based ram test comes out perfect, no problems at all. I also noticed that the RAM area gets very hot, burns to the touch. But the 256MB chip that came with it seems to be unaffected by this.
Anyone else add 512MB ram, that isn't having problems, mind telling me where they got it?

I don't have any personal experience, but I've seen multiple forum members talk about Crucial.

OK this is what I've got...

My PC froze solid yesterday as I was trying the Indiana Jones demo...

I rebooted and got the usual message ("computer restarted after an unexpected shutdown", then:

"The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation. Please check with the device manufacturer for a driver update". The driver in question is ati2dvag.dll, version 6.13.10.6218 (which is the old November driver... Gee I thought I installed Cat32 )

Thats wierd. When i freeze and then reboot it never gives me any messages.

Isolated case ?

Yeah, me too.

I upgraded to Catalyst 3.2, and the game crashes exactly at the same place, everytime.

So I'm thinking this has nothing to do with the other problem I had (which, besides this episode, seems corrected )

my games dont crash at the same point. sometimes i can actually play a full match of battlefield. other times it crashes 2 minutes after joining a game. just got a copy of Wolverines revenge and it crashed 3 times on me before i could even figure out how to play!

Just figured out that the drivers from Sager were not cat 3.2. I went with gsferrari's method of having cat 3.2 and now everything is fine !

Are you referring to downloading Catylyst 3.2 from ATI.com? I'm downloading it now as well as the latest one on the sager website. What is the best route to take, Sager or ATI drivers?????

Still having same problem

Hi, I'm new to the forums, but have been following this thread since the first time I tried to play DAoC with my new 8887-V. Looks like I have the same configuration as 'faded' and 'bob6987'.

I have tried everything listed here, and that meant entirely new (formated) re-installs of the operating system 3 times, incremental upgrades with trying things out each time I added something to see if it was 'all better'.

I can reproduce this problem (somewhat) simply by listening to Media Player with 'visualiztions' turned on, and playing spider solitare. was just killing time when I discovered this. Being able to reproduce problems consistently is half way to solving them.

Anyway, I'm about to re-install again, and apply the fix that 'bob6987' outlined, even though I have pretty much all of that already installed on my system and am still experiencing the problem. Why? Because in my handy dandy user manual, it states to be very careful and install the drivers in a particular order. By upgrading I did not observe that advice. I'm wondering if the order in which the new drivers are installed on the system has any thing to do with some people being able to run fine and others not.

Either way I'll post my results here, and if I am not sucessful will continue monitoring until someone comes up with a resolution.

Probably won't get to it till tonight, since I work and play on this laptop... and it's not so noticeable when I'm just working, only when I'm playing my favorite game. BTW, any other DAoC players out there?

Cheers,
Cele

Drivers...

Try the sager drivers and see if they do the job

Otherwise go to www.ati.com and download the Cat 3.2 drivers from there...they work well...

Somhow even though I got a lesser score with the Cat 3.1 driver I like it because it didnt give me the transparent ground problem in BF1942. The sager drivers DONT give this problem so I'll be keeping them - havent experienced any other problem with them yet...

Turn off the Autoupdate and the system restore functionality...much faster system...

there is also a win xp tweaking website - by black viper or someone - try out his tuning ideas...they work!

ATI Drivers

I tried to install the catalyst drivers from ATI and all it says is INF error and will not install. Is there a special version from ATI that suppoerts the mobility radeon 9000? Has anyone else gotten the catalyst drivers from ATI working on their NP 8887? Thanks!

I did, and they work great. I think I had to de-install the old ones, then run the installation program.

Here we go again

NO - you cannot run the program that you get from ATI

I have given the instructions on this forums and you can install using those instructions...

Just pasting them here for you :-

NOTE :-

These are the new set of instructions for the installation of the Catalyst 3.2 Drivers from ATI.

Steps:-

1] Download the Cat3.2 drivers from the ATI website or click the link below to get there directly :-
http://mirror.ati.com/support/drivers/powered.html

2] Save those files to some location on your HDD.
3] Start the Installation program for the Cat3.2 driver and save the files to some location other than your C drive (just to be clean about the whole thing).

NOTE : you have to stop the installation process after the files are extracted - exit the setup the next stage by clicking the cancel button...

4] Now uninstall the old drivers that you had installed.
Start -> Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs -> ATI Display Driver and the ATI Control Panel

Remove both these items and then restart your system

5] Windows will load with its crappy drivers and you will get a message saying that "new hardware was found" and then the driver installation window will open.

6] Here select "Install from a list or specific location"

7] Select "Dont search I will choose the driver to install"

8] Select "Display Adapters"

9] Click the "have Disk" button

10] You will get a big list - go to the middle of the list where you will see many Radeon XXXX series listed. Select any one of the Radeon 9000 series (but not the Radeon 9000 secondary) and proceed to install the driver.

11] You will get some sort of error message or a warning telling you that the driver is blah blah - ignore and proceed to install the driver.

12] The flying papers between two folder icons means that the steps you have followed are correct.

13] Congratulations!! Now you have installed the Cat 3.2 drivers. Before you restart please also install the ATI Control panel

14] ATI control panel is easy to install using the setup file that you downloaded without any special steps - just double click it and follow the instructions.

15] Restart the system and set the resolution you want because it will be 640X480 by default.

HAVE FUN!!!!
