What's your take on it?
So far, it seems snappy, but this may be because I have a fresh install only 2 days old... I did rip some CD's last night and averaged about 9x - 12x (they were being saved on the server, which I connect to wirelessly). Funny thing, the processor was only used about 12-20% for the ripping/encoding (I used MusicMatch 8, which I registered many moons ago, so all upgrades are free).

I haven't done any DVD encoding/burning yet, but I have played BF1942 (invisible textures still occur, but doesn't seem "as bad" as before) and it runs a bit better, I must say... like you said, Oliver, it's just a "feeling" but it does seem somewhat quicker. I typically play the DesertCombat (currently on 0.35) mod only, too.

So at the very least, doing day-to-day stuff, the HT difference is minimal. I haven't put the system through rigorous use, however, and when I do I'll post an update.

One thing HT allowed (or improved) was ALT-TABing out of intense games to do OS stuff in the background... was very quick while things were running. I'll try that as soon as I install another game (BF doesn't like ALT-TAB, but the couple times I did manage to get to the destop, it seemed more sluggish than when HT was enabled - no biggie).

i'm still having freezing on my 8887 on dx9 with sagers latest site drivers.

most of my freezing comes in games and i can usually make it happen when bringing down the battlefield console. If i wait a few minutes it will goto desktop with some error about windows recovering froma device malfunction (radeon 9000?). This is really getting on my nerves and i've talked with sager support about it and they are NO help at all.

I was wondering if anyone playing battlefield could try pulling down the console and see if it freezes.

My Laptop does freeze also quite often - I didnt install a lot of games yet, but the worse one is EVE Online - Cannot play it more than 10 sec -

I let the Pc run all night last night, with the Goldfish Aquarium on - No freeze.. I was afraid to get up this morning with it frozen.. At least thats a good new

I have the same config than most of you guys, Sager 8887, HT enabled, XP home, Catalyst 3.2 and Direct x 9.0

Was able to get it to freeze nicely by watching a movie and having a windowed game in the backgroung - Display was kind of slow so I tried to move one of the window.. Freeze happened right there...

Whats the point of HT if you cannot do two things at the same time "live" ( it didnt seem to freeze if I was leaving the Appz alone, just when I moved the windows.. )

The only time BF1942 freezes on me is when I was running DirectX 9.0a. I reinstalled and stayed at 8.1 and everything is fine. This is both WITH and WITHOUT hyperthreading enabled.

I think it's DX9's problem, and the only game I needed it for was FreeLancer that was a lock-up nightmare. Once that and DX9 was removed, everything was better.

Here's a DX9 "uninstaller" (replaces with DX8), untried my me, the usual considerable caveats apply. (Don't forget those restore points!)

EDIT: You can download, extract, and see what it does without running it.

EDIT2: The original link .

I just used it ( actually, I downloaded the files, but then, I followed the provided link to uninstall Direct X 9.0 )

I also tried EVE Online right after ( that supposely works only with Direct X 9 ) and now the laptop doesnt freeze anymore...

I still have HT enabled cause I wasnt able to turn it off without doing a clean install...

I did get a few error messages while desinstalling DX9, files were in use - I think those files were the Direct X TCP thingy, cause if I run DXdiag now, those are the only things that show errors...

It says Direct X 8.1

Well I guess i'm about ready for a format reinstall then. I swear... windows installed dx9 behind my back... it's good to hear that people did have problems with dx9 tho so i have more suspects.

Hey wait a sec...

when did you buy your system? I think windows is forcing people to use DX9.0a by packaging it in their windows installers...

Just make sure after you install OS by running dxdiag and DONT install any updates other than Service Packs. Install factory drivers for the moment and test for system stability.

I absolutely Loathe DX9.0a now causing so much headache...

i figured it was all fine and dandy but now i'm getting to the point where i've tried EVERYTHING else except using dx 8.1

and i got my system with no OS. I have my own copy of windows xp pro and home. tho this time i think i might try xp home. i hear the only differences are in the networking features and remote desktop (which i dont use)

Okay, well, I didn't get to do that complete re-install when I said I would, however, I did finally get around to it this last weekend. And as promised, I said I would report back the results.

I followed the instructions (the exact sequence for installing drivers) that bob6987 listed in his post and that seemed to do the trick.

I have been successfully playing DAOC and there have been times when I thought for sure I would freeze up (since it felt like other times in the past) and was pleasantly surprised that it did not lock up.

I am using the same version levels bob6987 described.

Thanks folks
