Recommedations for Lightweight notebook?

Hi, I'm currently searching for a nice lightweight notebook and I was hoping you guys might be able to give me some advice.

First, what I'd be using it for:

Mostly schoolwork (coding), typing, surfing the web. All application type stuff. If it can handle it, more intensive applications like 3d modelling apps. Maybe watching some movies or video files but that isn't a high priority. I've pretty much given up finding a light, thin laptop with a high power video card, so gaming is out of the picture (my desktop is good enough for that :P )

Size and such:

I don't want a really tiny screen. When I work on the computer, I have multiple windows open often and lots of text, so 12 inch screens are a bit too small. So I guess that leaves me with 14 inch screens.

Weight would be nice if it were around 5 lbs or less. And pretty thin would be nice too.

Stats:
Pentium M and a wireless connection.
Video card doesn't matter.
nice amount of RAM (512 or more)
HD doesn't matter too much either.
nice battery life would be nice, but that's not a deciding factor. I can live with a couple hours of juice if I must.

price range: about $1500, but I can go a bit higher if its worth it

Any suggestions? So far I've found one laptop that has fit the bill and that would be the Asus M2N. The problem is, that's the only laptop I've found. Are there any others out there like it (so I can have a choice)?

I plan to buy my laptop in 1.5-2 months, so maybe there's a new laptop coming out in the future?

And also, is it worth springing a hundred or more dollars just to upgrade to a Dothan Pentium M? What are the possible advantages of that kind of processor as opposed to the cheaper (what was it, Banias?) processor in the type of use that I described above.

Thanks a ton

I think you want one of the Fujitsu S6000 series notebooks.

As for Dothan, get it if you think you need the extra boost in performance, which I don't think you need.

Thanks! that does look pretty nice, although the screen is 1 inch smaller :P

I'm heading over to my local frys later today to check out what some screen sizes really feel like in real life

I concur with Youhou....

S6210 specs ($1500):
Pentium M 1.6
13.3" Crystal View Screen (Very good quality screen, arguably the best out there)
512MB RAM (ddr333 I believe)
40 gig 5400rpm (as configured at laptopsinc.com)
CDRW/DVD
3.6 pounds without optical drive in the bay, 3.9 with the optical drive in
From what I've heard, about 4.5 hours for battery life

This is also my personal choice, seems to fit your needs perfectly.

The S7010 would also be a nice choice if you're stuck on getting a 14 inch screen. But the Crystal View screen is just incredible (only on the S6210, and other Fujitsu N-series models).

Besides these two options, another you might consider is the Gateway 200x. I've heard some good things about it, but personally the low battery life made me stay away from it. It may not bother you as much... It's also a pretty good lookin notebook.

Gateway 200x specs ($1500):
Pentium M 1.5
14.1" screen
512 MB ram
40 gig 5400rpm (the 5400rpm HD costs 20 dollars more)
CDRW/DVD
4.3 pounds
about 2 hours for battery life

thanks for the advice!

another question: Any suggestions on where to buy these laptops? I was looking at www.rjtech.com but they don't have all of these models (I don't think...). Any other good online stores?

You can get them from www.portableone.com and you can find a very nice forum for fujitsus at www.leog.net

If you're looking at a subnotebook with out an internal combo drive, i'd go with an Asus S5. If you need the internal drive I don't think you're going to find a smaller 12" w/ internal drive than the Asus M5.... I don't have one but it was one option I was looking into and I think you could atleast look at your options. Check over at www.proportable.com

S5N and M5N are nice options, but the 12" would be too small for Ender...

You can find the Fujitsus at portableone, newegg.com

The gateway, of course, is gateway.com
