compaq r3000 = good deal ?

ah yeah, you probobly know my pointless Averatec posts. yeah, i am still in the market, not going to make my purchase till late august but i do want to feel good about my lappy thats why i am doing all my researching now. a while ago somebody recommended a compaq r3000 to me despite my mistrust issue with hp/compaq. there are a few variations of the r3000. the ones i am considering is r3000z with AMD64 and R3000t with a P4 and shared graphics. I am no heavy gamer, occasional CS, but then again, I ran that game on a 866mhz PIII and 256mb ram. I did a custom job of each that I can live with.

the Z: $1024
------------
AMD64 3000+
512mb ram (2*256)
XP home
DVD/CD-RW
54g wifi
40 gig 4200rpm hd
15.4" WXGA (1280x800)
64mb nvidia 440 go
8 cell bat

the T1074
---------------
P4 Mobile 2.8ghz
xp home
512mb ram (2*256)
40gig 4200rpm hd
dvd/cd-rw
54g wifi
15.4" WXGA (1280x800)
ATI 9000 AGP (shared up to 64mb?)
8 cell bat

my turnoff about the system: is the size and weight but considering it will stay at home most of it's life its a non-issue for me. the medeocre battery life is also non-(major)issue. also the fact its a compaq is just unsetteling. my friends told me way to many compaq/hp horror stories yet my 1/2 bro has a pavellion lappy for almost 3 years now w/o any problems. my one issue, is i see quite a few of you complaining about both graphics chips. according to a few, the 9000 is total junk and the 440 is outdated, slow and weak.

the things i like: AMD64 is looking rather sweet right now. the 512 ram (although rather standard, i would agree to 256 just to drive down the initial cost, i can always toss in a stick later). the WXGA, even though its a 15.4, not a 17, still better than a 15 or even a 14.1 i would settle for. one thing i do like about paqs is the case design, ok so its no alienware, ferrari or even a Compal but still looks nice.

but back on track, forget about weight and terrible battery life. from a non-heavy gaming perspective, is this a well rounded bang-for the buck system or is there a more loaded system for this price, (i don't want to go any higher than $1100 so that rules out the emachines)

The chassis on that laptop is great if you don't care about weight. Battery life was 2 hours, so not too bad when i had it (although mine was a P4 so yours should be better than that). Overall, for that price, you can't go wrong with it.

Might want to post here also.

Without considering the weight and battery life and gaming being a non-issue this should be a fine machine at those prices. Just make sure that the Athlon 64 is an actual Athlon 64 because I heard a while back that HP bought a bunch where the 64 bit option was turned off (hopefully someone will post saying differently) unless you don't really care about upgrading to Windows 64 bit down the road.

I've seen a lot of reported issues with the home version of HP notebooks but the business notebooks are considered excellent quality.

i thought this was a home notebook lol

It is, I was saying that the home notebooks have been said to have quality problems and that the business ones were considered great.

maybe the 2100 series and the X1000 series, but I haven't heard anything particularly bad about the 3000 series...

edit: plus I owned one for a while and it was well built, just poor video for my liking (and screen ghostin gissues)

I wouldn't group the x1000 with the 2100 series. The x1000 is one of Compaq's most popular and well reviewed notebooks. The only questionable notebooks in the entire HP/Compaq comsumer line are the 2100/2500 series on the Compaq side and the ze4000/ze5000 on the HP side. Everything else is pretty solid.

yeah the x1000 has a radeon 9200 though , but yeah I agree, it's a great laptop.
