although i ended up buying direct from Sager, i first ordered the system from PCTorque...i really liked the fact that the system was much more customizable. but the card could never get approval. so i called and spoke with a gent that was desctibing for me the hell that their systems were giving them today. needless to say, i decided not wait till tomorrow, and went through sager direct to get the ball rolling. i'm at my wits end with waiting for things....first the damn dell ordered now cancelled that went nowhere in 11 days...me needs lappy top!!

this is a really cool community...reminds me of the close-knit group over yonder at macfixitforums.com, which i visit daily.

....ended up with the 8887/16.1/2.8ghz/512/60@4200/DVD CDR combo/2nd cd read only drive/MP3+32/802.11b pci/xp pro

hey congratulations on your purchase. My only question is that under your name it says "you wish you could buy a mac?" I understand MAC's are expensive but with the money you spent on your 8887 for a little more you could have got what you really wanted? Or was that just a sarcastic comment?

Why sager ??

I would have worked out something else with a reseller because buying direct from sager is at least $200 - $300 more than buying from a reseller...

Still i guess you were impatient and I know that feeling...

you couldnt do a wire transfer to a reseller? or send them a cheque ?

Re: W00t! just ordered the 8887!

the top-o-the-line aluminum powerbook 17" starts at $3299...which in itself is not a great departure from the price of the sager i chose. but after adding the 3 year warranty and wireless and little junk there's a $1000 discrepancy betwixt the sager and the PB17.

i have 4 power macintosh computers and over 20 vintage. this is my first ever wintel purchase.

i'm in the process of obtaining my network+ and ccna certifications so i figured that now is the time to learn windows. i just need to somehow figure out how to allow for 95/98/NT/XP pro/some linux distro to all simultaneously co exist on the system. XP pro being the main use, the others on small partitions(1gb or so)

ferrari: the price at sager was within $50± of the price at PCtorque. i chose PCtorque intially because of the raving reviews they've received here on the forums, for service and support and all that jive they're website really needs work though....the usability and user friendliness dissapears completely after the build-to-order page. i was getting frustrated. but other than that all was good.

Congratulations, now send that puppy to me and let me take it threw the works

lol jk but I hope you enjoy it! Im sure you will

You're wrong...

I have chosen a random config but gimme your config and i'll show you the difference in price...

At sagernotebooks.com :-

CPU Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology at 3.06GHz
Memory 1024MB PC2100 (2 DIMMs) SDRAM
Primary Hard Drive 40.0GB (5400rpm) Ultra DMA Hard Drive
Floppy Drive 3.5" 1.44MB Floppy Drive
CD-ROM/DVD-ROM 1X DVD-R/RW Combo Drive & Softwares
Battery Smart Li-ION Battery
Modem Integrated 56K V.90 Internal Fax/Modem
Network Adapter Integrated 100Mbps Ethernet LAN plus Internal 802.11b Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Module
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Warranty Additional 3-year warranty from Philips Magnavox

Costs $3304.00

vs.

At PC Torque.com :- $3019.00 for the same configuration.

Besides - at PC Torque you have the freedom of not choosing the MP3 player or the Operating system (which I think you might be needing seeing that you previously owned a Mac).

So I dont understand how you can say that they are only $50.00 apart...

Lemme check for your configuration and i'll brb with the results of my investigation
post #7 of 61

WRONG AGAIN!!!

Here is your configuration

CPU Pentium® 4 2.8GHz with 512KB on-die Cache
Memory 512MB PC2100 (1 DIMM) SDRAM
Primary Hard Drive 60.0GB (4200rpm) Ultra DMA Hard Drive
Floppy Drive 3.5" 1.44MB Floppy Drive
CD-ROM/DVD-ROM 8X DVD / 24X10X24 CD-RW Combo Drive & Softwares
Battery Smart Li-ION Battery
Modular Device Bay 24X Max. CD-ROM Drive with Barcket (CD-8882)
Modem Integrated 56K V.90 Internal Fax/Modem
Network Adapter Integrated 100Mbps Ethernet LAN plus Internal 802.11b Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Module
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Warranty 1-year standard warranty from Sager

At Sagernotebooks.com this costs : $2675.00

At PCTorque.com this costs : $2544.00

There is still enormous discrepancy in the prices...

For that $130 extra that you spent in a hurry (Though I am not questioning your actions or indicating another course of action) I would have bought myself a few software packages, games and nice speakers to go with the laptop.

Dont take my posts wrong - I am just dissecting your statement that the sagernotebooks.com offered you the same system at just $50.00 more than the resellers

If that was the case Sager will collapse because they are not interested in being a reseller - they depend on the resellers to do the marketing and selling work - they just sell in volume to the resellers.

You always ALWAYS get a better deal through the resellers...

Congratulations...

I feel sorry for having done the last two posts...

I am sure you will have the same experience as the rest of us with that fantastic laptop. HAVE FUN!!!
Perhaps he chose custom builder which would lead to a higher price. Just a reminder for anyone else ordering that the semi-configured C,S and V models will save you a $100+ as opposed to choosing a custom build.

no way

Hi everyone! Great forums btw.

For the past 2 weeks, I've been reading these forums and it's been fun. I usually spend about half an hour a day on Anandtech. But now I take that time to read THESE forums.

I was wondering why I would get different prices for the same things when I chose "custom" or the "pre-builts." Now I know. As soon as I sell off my desktop, I will probably get what people refer to as the "beast."

If both a 8887 and 5670 had a 2.66, would the exhaust be at the same temperature? I'm under the impression that the 8887 is just hotter, no matter what. And do a lot of people purchase their systems with more than the 1 year warranty?

Thanks much.

edit: forgot to also ask about the 5670/8887 screens. are they both 1600x1200 native?
yes that native resolutions just that fruity
post #12 of 61

NOTE :

If you select the UXGA option then your screens will be 1600x1200 native res. If you shose the 15.7" or the SXGA then you will have 1280x1024 Native (or is 1024x768?? not sure...)

The Sager's so called Exhaust is not HOT if you want to know. It is warm and there is really not much between the 8887 and 5670. I was of the impression the 8887 runs cooler because it has more air circulation going for it. However I tested the 5670 recently and it was cooler than my 5660.

One thing to note is that the 5670/5660 have an exhaust on the left side of the laptop which is nice for right handers because the mouse is placed on the other side of the laptop.

The 8887 has its exhaust on the Right side of the laptop so its blowing air onto your hand and warm air at that. The mouse hand can get pretty uncomfortable very soon I should think...Better to ask people who own the 8887 about this...

Lol, the fan position is one of my only gripes with my 8887. But, nothings perfect. It gets warm but it's not all that bad. Kind of cozy

sorry, I had to do that.

Thanks for the quick reply. How is the 16x12 on a 15" lcd? I would imagine it would be pretty hard to read. I'm using 16x12 too but I'm a Dell 20.1" lcd. It allows me to sit almost 2 feet away and still be able to read everything legibly.

Reason I'm asking about the 16x12 native is I'm one of those people that loves NOT to minimize my windows. I love to have a browser window on the left with a few im windows and trillian all visible.

The 5670 would suite me fine and costs less too

edit: generally speaking, would it be cool to keep the lappy on 24/7 because as a desktop replacement, that is what I am hoping to do.

BEAUTIFUL!!!

the 5670's UXGA screen is beautiful. Please dont deny yourself this treat by going for an SXGA screen...

the viewing angles are to die for and I used the test 5670 only at 1024x768 most of the time...

No problems reading text at 800x600, 1024x768. 1280x1024 is a little blurry

1600x1200 is faulking awesome!!!
Haha. Sweet.

24/7 usage...

Yes you can keep the laptop on 24/7 but this is not something I have tried. Just remove the batteries once they are fully charged so that you dont overcharge them. Always store batteries in fully charged state because uncharged batteries self destruct by going into deep discharge when stored without some residual charge.

I have a $9.00 fan from walmart pointed at the laptop at all times - this is better than any other investment I have ever made. The laptop fans come on a lot less often.

Use the standby option over the hibernate option....I have never used hibernate but if it ever came to that I would just switch off the laptop

Save your screen by letting it shut off after one minute of inactivity...

decisions decisions

I think I might just go for a 5670 instead.

Doesn't your $9 fan give you problems on cold days? I have problems playing video games even when it's cold. Let alone a fan blowing cold air at me and my hands.

How does this setup look? 5670 with the UXGA, 2.66, 512M, 60g 5400rpm, 8x dvd, 16x10x24 cdrw, 3 year warranty all for $2091. Sounds like a good deal to me.

I seriously cannot wait.

edit: how hot do the chips get? my 2.53 @ 3ghz is at 34 idle, 42 load.

Thanks again.

NOTE :

Sincerely :

Either get the 2.4 or get the 3.06 with HT
512MB of RAM is sufficient

get the 40GB 5400rpm and upgrade to the 7200rpm drives when they become available. The 60GB is a little more expensive and you will just have to get rid of it when the 7200 comes out - its easier on the heart to get rid of the 40GB

Get the DVD CDRW combo drive - cheaper than having individual drives.

Think about the 3 year warranty. Honestly I am thinking of getting rid of my 3 year warranty - I want to tinker with the laptop after this year is over...

And I might sell it and get another one in which case the 3 year warranty is a waste...

I would (if I may) suggest the following configs :-

1] PERFORMANCE :-
--------------------------

P4 3.06Ghz with Hyper Threading
512 MB DDR RAM
128MB Radeon 9000
15" UXGA Screen
DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
40GB 5400rpm HDD

2] Budget :-
---------------

P4 2.4 Ghz
512MB RAM
128MB M9
15"UXGA Screen
DVD/CDRW Combo Drive
40GB 5400rpm HDD

I dont need the internal minipci wireless but its only $95 more - so you might wanna get it installed because if you want it later you have to ship your laptop back to Sager.

What do you mean by that!?!? You have a 2.53Ghz at 3Ghz??

Use one of those configs. I suggest the 2.4Ghz CPU - you can always plonk in the HT enabled CPU when they become cheap.
Actually, what I could do is move my 2.53 into the lappy when I get it and throw the 2.4 in my desktop to sell. I heard CPU prices are gonna drop next week. One of my coworkers told me that. He's the purchasing manager at the place I work.

The more I read through the forums, the more indecisive I feel. Now I want the 8887 because of the 16" screen but it's 12lbs?! Holy crap! Not like I'll be moving it much, but still. My desk might warp a bit. haha. How heavy is the 5670 with battery?
