W00t! just ordered the 8887! - Page 2

Hee hee

If you do anything like swapping CPU's your warranty will go out of the window - and considering you want the 3 year warranty its a foolish thing to do

Make up your mind first and get rid of all this silliness...Once you get your laptop you are not going to touch it until you get past the warranty period.

The 8887 is also a nice laptop and not as heavy as it looks. I have lifted the 5660, 5670 and 8887 and was honestly surprised that the 8887 was not ALL that heavy.

The 5670 will top out at 10 Lbs. The 8887 at 13 Lbs.

You cant go wrong with either laptop but if you are interested in playing games then stick with the 5670. It has the better screen and the 8887 screen has some ghosting problems which are not visible unless you play games...

Duh! Okay, then I will probably have to go with a 2.66 cpu. I don't think I can hang with a 2.4 since I've been going at 3ghz for about 4 months.

I don't play games that often but when I do, it's like all nighters at lan parties. Once every half a year or something. What I'm more interested in is a screen suitable for major surfing, typing up papers, and occassional dvd watching.

For some reason, the 8887 looks cooler to me. Is there anywhere I could possibly check out a 16x12 15" and 16" for comparison? THAT would be nice.

Trust me...

There is no advantage of paying $100 something more for the 2.66Ghz CPU - it offers no performance advantage over the 2.4 Ghz. Be sensible...

Either you go all the way or stay at a sensible level - shelling out valuable money for useless increments makes no sense. that extra 200Mhz isnt gonna do anything for you - BELIEVE ME!!!

get the 2.4 - it will be more than enough for your needs. You can always throw it out after one year (assuming you get the 1 year warranty) and plonk in the new HT enabled CPU - THIS IS THE BEST THING TO DO...

the 8887 does not look cooler than the 5670 - its freaking huge and ugly IMO. The 5670 has a snazzier look and you can customise the wristpad. The 8887 looks bare - I have seen it - check out my review pictures and you will agree with me.

The pictures in the review and benchmark section should be enough - the 5670 has the best screen I HAVE EVER SEEN - it beats the Dell Ultrsharp by a mile and a half!!

You mentioned earlier that if I wanted a wireless card later on, I'd have to send it back to Sager?

Yes

If you dont order it with your laptop and decide later that you want to have it - you will have to send it back - this is not something you can install on your own and sager will not honor your warranty if you attempt to.

I wanted it badly and still do but I cannot part with my laptop for a single minute

You can get a wireless card on your own... just not an INTEGRATED wireless on your own.

And also, if you wait a little bit you can get a 2.4 with HT.

I have a couple wireless cars... the little hotwheel-sized ones.. they are very hard to control, though, because the turning is either ON/OFF (full/straight) and the controls are via rocker-switch buttons (rather than joysticks or wheels).

But man, they are cool! Got the speed enhancement pack, swappin' out motors, suspensions, etc...

to partition the system will it be necessary to wipe and reformat, or is there a utility that will allow me to do this sans format?

would it be prudent to low level the disk before i start using?
So it is possible to add one in later, it just won't be integrated. I would like to get a specific brand or type so that's why I'm asking.

Repartitioning usually requires reformatting. But If you have Partition Magic then you do not have to reformat.

If it's a new drive, you shouldn't have to low level it.

Good luck.

why o why

Why wasnt the 2.8 offered as an alternative to the 3.06HT. I want to go as fast as possible as many people do but hearing horror stories about the hyperthreading and tv recording, I opted away from it - plus i saved. As someone said, i can plop it in later.

Technically, one cannot low-level format newer IDE drives. The phrase "low level format" is a leftover from the early days of PC's and Hard Drives.

A true low-level format would destroy the disk, and is only done at the factory at the time of manufacturing. But we knew what he meant.

hard to imagine

the 8887 i ordered just shipped, according to sager.com. this is just 24 hours after placing the order...the order i placed for a comprable(top-o-the-line anyway) dell inspiron 8500 wasn't even in the system after 11 days. i am beside myself with excstacy. it's ironic though....if dell had not given me all that time to doubt my purchase from them, i would have ended up with their system, never having discovered the beauty that is sager. to their credit, however, i wasn't given any ****e about cancelling. but then again...i cancelled in the "first of the three weeks" it was going to take that billion dollar company to ship me a dam system....

"Dude, you're not getting a Dell? Why?"

"They take too damn long."

I don't know of any problems with HT at all... where'd you hear that?

Off-topic but lazy to start new thread, if you do a lot of disc-to-disc copying, you really have no choice but to "raw-build" and pay a little more for separate drives, no?

Keep in mind I am replacing my desktop. Selling it off to pay for this thing.
Why do you say that? You can get two drives seperate on the pre config selection too....

Why ??

You can just get a writer for the modular bay...

dont do a raw builder unless you wanna blow your money for the heck of it. Find the nearest match in the 3 presets and then mod it to your taste. In the 8887 and 5670 you can have two drives in the laptop...
Is it possible to configure with 8x dvd and then 16x cdrw?

You mentioned the heat blowing out on the right side. I am right handed and so my mouse will be there. Is it that big of a problem?

Oh, and how long is that "free hardware replacement" good for?

Not really...

It will get warm no doubt...
You have to try it and experience it to see how bad it feels. I imagine it could get cozy there...I used the 8887 for a few hours playing Splinter Cell and I didnt feel too bad....nice and cozy...

Yes you can config the laptop with 8X DVD and the 16X CD Writer. But this is more expensive than the combo drive so choose well...You can always copy the contents of the CD to your HDD and then copy to a fresh CD - this will save you the money you will otherwise be spending on the second drive...

But if you are getting the 8887 then go ahead...at least you dont have the modular FDD and Battery to worry about
