We are NOT arguing about the value of extended warranties.
We are discussing whether it would be in the best interest of someone in college to:
a.) buy a notebook from an HP or other company that offers onsite and other warranty.
b.) buy a Mitac, or other ODM product from a reseller, and not be sure of how warranty issues will be handled (well or poorly).
That is the sum of the disagreement.
Please don't confuse it by suggesting that we are arguing the value of extended warranty, which we are not.

So, they have a warranty.
My argument is that if they go under, you have no warranty.
Even then, from the link you sent, ASUS warranties are covered directly by ASUS, so you would be better off with an ASUS than a Mitac from them.
I don't think that can be disputed.

CRAP, I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHO I AM ARGUING WITH, I GUESS IT IS FAR PAST TIME TO STOP.

yeah, it's actually a good debate, and relevant to the perspectives of a lot of people on this forum, i think. there is no bad information, just bad choices.

I personally think if you order from hypersonic, you shouldn't have too many problems to start with, because with the time they take to build the damn thing, it should last a while. Plus that burn-in period. I have yet to hear of an RMA for hypersonic (well except on resellerratings.com, but those are pretty old..)
yeah okay but let's discuss something like alien then. You will agree with me that they are not going anywhere anytime soon (although i have no #%@#ing reason why: because some people have too much money i guess?). Companies like voodoo and hypersonic are selling essentially the same product as alien, because of the ODM nature of laptops. You could even argue that dell and all your big brands are selling the same thing.

i agree aamsel, the asus is a perfectly good system. it's a shame they don't have the 128 Mb 9700 in there otherwise it would be a clear choice. but that's pretty much how people like me are able to afford the most advanced hardware, we have to make some concessions based on judgement. i don't think there's excessive risk involved with buying a mitac, but that's just my opinion.
yeah i mean if you really want to "make sure you know what's going in" like you do for desktops, just buy a barebones and buy all the parts separately. You assemble it yourself, break it you buy it...ahhh the good old desktop days

They (hypersonic) may very well be the best reseller out there, unfortunately I THOUGHT that I couldn't wait for a system from them. (Little did I know that 6 weeks later I would not have made a choice!!)
But, lets face it, people:
Computer hardware fails when it fails, you can do just so much to prevent it failing, burn-in, etc. but when a hard drive goes out, or a capacitor fries, then you are out of business until it gets fixed.
At that time, service and warranty become very important to you, and, if you don't have a spare notebook or PC, then the amount of downtime you will have becomes also very important to you.
Who has the best service??
I have no idea.

I think in a lot of cases, because companies like Compal, Mitac, since they a.) don't mass produce units like Dell, HP, etc, because they don't do the same business, and b.) don't cut corners to save on manufactoring because of advertising, competition with other big name companies, you get a better quality product that will probably last longer, simply because of better quality parts, etc. That is just my view. So, what you get by purchasing a from a company like Compal, Mitac, is a better quality product with less chance of it breaking, theoretically. What you get by purchasing from Dell, IBM, HP, is a known not so good of product, because they have to try and cut corners to save money, but more assurance, because they can afford to offer accidental coverage and things to that magnitude. Point, counter-point.

And if you buy one, I hope it runs for 3+ years without a single glitch, and gives you thousands of hours of total computing pleasure. (and I mean that sincerely!!)
Then, you won't have anything to worry about.

Now that I have been nice, PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE HELL TO BUY!!???

well it's very hard to avoid downtime in those cases anyways (example: your motherboard dies). Even the best on-site service can't fix that outright. Anything like a hard drive dies, just use cross-shipping and install it yourself. Hypersonic covers shipping both ways if your computer does need service i believe, something you should consider. and as i mentioned before, discountlaptops offers on-site, but i doubt that's a quality service coming from them.

I know a woman who bought a Dell, for instance, a brand new Dell, 3 months ago. They put USB 1.1 ports in it. Talk about cutting corners...
yeah i don't think HP or Dell really cut corners. 99% of the time i think they need their tech support simply because their users are dumb (no offense). For example, most users call tech support or even RMA when they get a virus or windows gets corrupted or whatever. Experienced users can deal with software problems at least, and in some cases hardware problems as well. I guess what it boils down to is you need to make a personal choice based on how much you know about computers and your ability to make repairs on them. If you're good at it, you can save a bundle by buying ODM. If not, a big name brand with completecare protection is the best for you.

Buy one of each, and send me one of the ones you don't want to keep.

I agree completely.
However, here is MY Dell story for you:
Dell came out (onsite) and replaced my LCD twice, and the motherboard (actually everything but the plastic case) once, and it was still screwed up. Then they replaced it with a refurbed "upgrade" notebook, also defective. Then they replaced it with a brand new "upgrade" notebook.
When that one arrived with a defect, I sold it on EBAY the next day, and it was gone in a week. The new owner of it got Complete Care, so if they happen to notice the defect, they can get it repaired again and again.
All this happened 6 weeks ago.
Previously, I loved Dell.
I work for a place that has 100 percent Dell desktops, notebooks and servers.
The "moral of this story" is:
I agree, warranty and service are great, but...
it is the quality of the service that matters the most.

Man this is a very debateable thread here. I think i will stay out of this one. haha
post #60 of 81
This I think has also been overlooked. JC is asking for a high end computer in the thread title. Aren't Mitac's, Compal's, etc, considered more high end than a Dell, HP, etc? Just wondering
