Driver Installation Order...

Hey, guys. As you might know, I'm planning on a Compal CL56 in about a month. I've been an AMD guy for quite a while, so I've lost touch with the Intel ways. When I get this puppy, what order do you suggest installing basic software (and which software!)? When I reformat my AMD desktop, I usually do:

1. Chipset Drivers
2. DirectX
3. Video Drivers
4. Everything else (Audio, NIC, etc.)

Your thoughts, please. Thank you. (rincewind, I'd like to know your method)

After a Clean install of windows xp, I usually follow this order:

1. Gfx drivers first...(it makes viewing installs etc. easier)
2. Any driver related to the mobo or chipset
3. Peripherals
4. At this point, I check device manager to make sure that there are no warning signs for missed drivers. IF there are, take care of them first.
5. run windows update. If you have xp, update to sp1, then make sure you have every security patch, update patch, etc. installed.

Now this is when I install my programs.

1. I usually install office xp first -or-
2. Install programs related to installed peripherals.
3. DivX, Ac3 filter, entertainment programs, windows media player 9, itunes
4. Games.

I have always done it pretty much in this order and haven't had any problems at all (except where there were hardware conflicts between devices, that was very grueling).

gl, i'm really enjoying my cl56 (got it yesterday ).

On Maximum PC's July 2004 issue page 37:
"For maximum stability when performing a fresh installation of Windows, install the OS first, then Service Pack 1, then your motherboard’s chipset drivers, then DirectX, and finally your video drivers. Finish by visiting www.windowsupdate.com to grab all the critical updates for you PC."

So basically (for people who prefer a quick list):
  1. Windows OS
  2. Service Pack
  3. Motherboard chipset drivers
  4. DirectX
  5. Video drivers
  6. Other Windows updates and other drivers

Nice! So I've been doing it right, according to MaxPC. I have SP1 slipstreamed on my install CD; that's pretty convenient.

Or you can try this

Just use the auto driver install on the driver disk provided. It will install all the draivers for the system in about 5 minutes. All you will need to do is run windows update after the drivers are in an re-detect the USB driver.

Driver installation on the CL56 takes about 5 minutes to do, the worst part is waiting for the long windows update.
