Quality of laptop subwoofers?

I have noticed that many laptops feature subwoofers nowadays. However, most external subwoofers are the same size of the laptop. My acquitance has got one that's actually 90 cm (3 feet) tall! I wonder how these things fit into laptops... So any idea what's the quality of laptop subwoofers?

I now need to carry external speakers with me to get clear low-frequency sounds out of Acer Travelmate 800. How about newer laptops with subwoofers? No need for external speakers anymore?

Subwoofer is only a marketing term mistakenly used by the laptop manufacturers. Most laptop subwoofers are very small and therefore generate sound in the 100Hz-250Hz range. Standard subwoofers, on the other hand, should produce sounds in the 20Hz-80Hz range. Therefore laptop "subwoofers" are not real subwoofers, but rather woofers or midranges. They do improve sound quality, however, since laptops without them only have those even smaller tweeters. Just don't expect real bass from these speakers.
