The future of Apple desktops coming to an end? - Page 3

I dunno about that.
I run Linux quite happily on my laptops and desktops and never have stability issues... only usability issues.
I think the stability, or lack thereof, of Windows is due to its incredibly bad design and implementation.

BUT... If you don't want to blow the extra cash on an Ipod and you want more functionality for less money, check out the Neuros. A few features in the unit:

1. FM receiver
2. FM Broadcaster
3. USB 2.0
3. Line In (for microphone MP3/WMA)
4. Record via built in Microphone (MP3/WMA)
5. Record live Radio broadcasts MP3/WMA (soon functionality for PVR for Radio)
6. WMA support
7. MP3 support
8. OGG support
9. REMOVABLE HARD DRIVE.
- you read right, removable. Have multiple HD backpacks with one "brain"
10. Take the Hard Drive off and go Solid state with 256MB of memory in the "brain"
11. AMAZING support. No really, it's great.

Only down side, IMHO, is that it is larger than an Ipod because it currently uses Laptop 2.5" hard drives. 1.8" drives are due later this year.

On the other hand, their forums are frequently visited by Neuros staff, including the president. They even have a section for "what do you want to see in the next firmware upgrade?" This is a company that listens to it's users.

I've got one, and while it's not as "sexy" as the IPod, I still get people going Ooo all the time. highly recommended.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this possiblity yet, so I'll bring up my $0.02:

Could it possibly be that Apple has decided that the current trend of increased notebook sales and decreases in desktop sales is the future, and set up their current product line accordingly. As the performance and cost delta between desktops and notebooks approaches zero, there's no reason to buy a desktop. And for the REAL power users, Apple still offers the workstation line.

Apple has always been a company just a little ahead of the curve. This explanation makes the most sense to me.

For those of you who like the iPod, check out the iRiver IHP-100 or IHP-120... way better IMHO

the iPod has a pretty good design and user interface though, have you seen it?
yeah... I checked out both the iPod and the iRiver.
The iPod scratches when you breath on it
Also, the iRiver has recording, AM/FM etc...
Finally, if you really care greatly, the iRiver has superior sound quality.

For more info, visit head-fi.org (I think).

quoty quoty quot

As the performance and cost delta between desktops and notebooks approaches zero...

-------------------
The best laptops out there barely push 4k in 3dmark03, while a high end desktop can break 7k. Thats a pretty huge performance difference.

(i know 3dmark03 is a synth benchmark, but it still works for a comparison)

-------------------

grphx is just one aspect of it, but consider i can stick a radeon 9800xt into a midrange price desktop and blow away the highest of the high end sagers

we're not talking workstation here, we're talking people like you and me

do you expect the release of x800 to be faster than the current mid to top PCI graphics cards available at the time? noooo...

there's no reason to buy a desktop

i have issues what that statement

IHP 120 is awesome. almost double the batt life of ipod. inline LCD remote comes with it with FM recorder. doesn't scratch like ipod.

but, it doesnt have the scroll wheel.

i got the gmini 220 instead cause it can read my CF cards (never have to buy a CF card again for my camera now, or bring my laptop on vacation with me), has built in voice recording, a huge 2.5'' display with a massive 11 text lines, a smaller footprint than ipod or ihp120, and costs $100 less.

Well I REALLY like my iPod....that's just me though....iRiver certainly makes quality products that NEVER fail to deliver....I'm just partial to the iPod.

You really can't go wrong with either one...

Not that it matters

But Apple usually has plans to announce new products at the WWDC. I'm fairly certain that this year, Jobs & Co. will continue their fine tradition, and have something fun and exciting for Mac addicts the world over.

Most folks are expecting a G5 iMac. G5 PowerBooks will likely be delayed till Q4-Q1 of '05, no idea why, but some have cited "cooling issues" for the G5 chip. G5 Xserves are possible, but it depends on who you listen to.

The iPod will likely get more functionality also, tho that is unlikely to be video (yet), as Jobs appears to be opposed to it.

Go look for yourself. Mac Rumors has lots of tasty tidbits.

As to what actually happens, time will tell. But one thing seems certain, with Jobs still on board, Apple isn't going to be scaling back. Retrenching, retooling, and re-strategizing, but not re-treating. And that's a good thing -- competition in this space only means more cool toys for us gadget freaks.

They demo'ed PearPC on The ScreenSavers once: let me just say this, if you thought emulating XP on X was slow....just wait 'till you try running X on XP.
