r3000z not best for me?

see my sig. that is what for the past 3 days has been my "system of choice" that i am planning to order ones late august rolls around. I was casualy looking around different sites and walked into this: http://www.internetishop.com/product...p?item=755C30J

price wise...(plus the extra ram i was throwing into the r3000) they come out the same. and i am stuck but i think my meeting with this thing could be the end of me wanting a r3000z. first, what is this computer, a Compal? how good is it.

without knowing this systems quality...just spec wise these are my thoughs.

CPU: the 3000+ or 3200+ AMD64 sounds tempting, especialy because I want to keep my lappy for a few years but the P4 3.06 HT..although a hot runner is one powerful cpu.

RAM: athlon has the upper hand here...clearly.

GPU: ATI Radeon Mobility 9000 64MB vs 440 go...i know, both of these GPUs are outdated and both get their amount of bashing on these boards..but somehow the ATI sounds so much better than the nVidia (does anyone know if the vid is upgradable on this lappy?...i know its not on the compaq).

Screen:15" SXGA+ vs 15.4 WXGA although widescreen sounds awesome..i don't watch dvds much when i compute...thats why i have my home theater. and CS looks better on a standard screen anyway...right?

optical drive: same exact thing

card reader: both of em got it

firewire: not that i have any firewire devices (yet) but compaq doesnt have the port

HD: same size...only this one is a 5400rpm...not 4200

mobility..both are monsters...but this one is 7.2lbs...1lbs off the paq

wifi: this one just doesn't have it. paq has a clear advantage with its built in 54g

another minor detail: this one has a PS/2 port. i know, its outdated technology but i have this cool mouse (see mouse thread) that is a ps/2 that i've been dieing to use.

to make it easier on your head here is an outline of questions you could try to answer:
1. spec wise...whats better bang for the buck? benchmarks?
2. internetishop's service/return policy/dead pixel policy...ect....
3. what system is this? (compal? voodoo? crap?)
4. do you think it will last 3-4 years?
5. gaming wise...i know both chips are weak...what can pull off FarCry better?
6. overall, if you were me, would you ditch the paq and grab this thing? (i want your opinion..don't tell me "well..it depends on if you want...." i dont care what i want...i wanna know if you would do the swap or not) and why?

both the compaq and whatever the hell that is (didn't look at it) are not portable at all. both the p4 and the amd, which is not low voltage, are going to suck battery life like the hooker down on the corner (and trust me, she sucks quite well...or so i hear)

so, even though they have wireless options, you will need to have an outlet for anything longer than an hour, maybe an hour and a half.

both the p4 w/ HT and the AMD are great CPU's, but i would go with the p4 system, it seems to be a better system. better gpu, (if i remember right, the nvidia is only 32mb?), cpu's are comparable, better HDD. go with the system that is not that compaq. point, counter point.

ok i just looked at the system. i couldn't tell you what it is. it isn't the compal cl56, i know that, but i don't know what it is. maybe someone else will know

Its a Fujitsu,They also have it with a Nvida FX GO 5600 128 meg for about the
same price.

i dunno man. i would try to stay away from systems where the gpu is the bottleneck cause you can't replace it in 2 years without pulling out the whole mobo. if you got a low-end P-M system right now you can always replace it later if you're having serious speed issues.

i can understand if you don't have the extra money to get one of the high-end gpus, but if you can scrape some more together i would try to get something else. for instance the economy config of the Mitac8050 is only $1319 at rjtech right now with free ground shipping, and that comes with a 1.5 P-M which will do just fine for at least a year imo. plus of course you get the stellar m11, which should last a hell of a lot longer than a 9000/go440. and it's much more portable than the r3000z, a little more portable than that fujitsu u saw on inetshop, and probably gets a ton more batt life than either of them.

$1319 - $1189 + $40 (shipping) = $90 more.

if you can find the money, it's worth it. you'll future proof yourself and be able to play farcry right now at 1024x800 at around 50 fps.

It appears to be an older Uniwill model. I think Alienware used to use (or may use them now) them as an ODM.

I gotta agree with Aikeo. If you have hopes of running Far Cry enjoyably, I'd sell a kidney and a lung (kidding, don't do that) in order to move up to at least a Mobility 9600 64mb (preferably a 128mb).

ill buy your kidney for $90

the farcry thing is just a test. i am not planning to be playing that game at all. i said it before and i will say it again, i am no (hardcore) gamer. i mean i played GTA3 on my 866mhz 256mb 4mb video at around 18fps ..laggy yes..playable..sort of. i wish i had the money but i already streched my budget too far. $1150 is where i put the line. (i started shopping at the $800-900 range). Fujitsu...i heard good things about these systems. My friend has a 4 year old PIII LifeBook that is still running strong.

can somebody give me a heads up on the internetishop's policy? service? tech support?

policy: 15% restocking fee if you return for no reason. Prices: outrageously low. Parts: draw your own conclusions.
