Let me re-phrase it: HT makes everyday tasks (using the OS) much smoother. I can have more things going at once and still have a very smooth and snappy OS (e.g. running explorer / doing file operations). Or while one thing is running (game, mpeg2-encoder, CD-rip/encode) I can do other things w/o any slow-down.
You need to start running Linux, then :-) I had the same experience when I moved over from Windows to RH 6.2

I ran MDK 9.0 (and several versions prior) on my desktop system... it's not as snappy, but I wrote that off to default drivers (I have a GF4 4400). Linux has improved immensely in the last several years (I started with Caldera 3.x back in '97-ish, which was my favorite distro back then).

While I'll admit Windows, in and of itself, is a real resource hog, it's not as bad as many pro-*nix/anti-ms'ers would like it to be. Don't get me wrong, I'm in neither camp: I'm using windows 99.999% of the time (work & home), but I am waiting for Linux to take off (like millions of others); but it is the linux community itself that will prevent this from happening (look at Apple).

When I run work-related apps (which is what I do 95% of the time), it's not even close. I can open up many more apps and not even notice what's going on. With the default gl drivers, I was getting a muuuuch higher FPS from q3 than I did on the windows side (150+ with everything jacked). However, with the new Radeon drivers - lower FPS, but much lower CPU impact. It's still plenty (25-80+, everything highest). Oh well.

Buhahahahaha

Finally my lappy is back as you guys must have seen me posting. Still a 5660 D which was a monster a few months ago but now looks like a crawl compared to newest models.

Yes. I paid 0. No bill. But they tried:

--> Support lab in Europe: You have opened your laptop and therefore have voided the warranty. The board is dead. You need to get your mobo replaced.

--> Buhahahahw, what a joke. Sir, i do fix computer myself, and i am telling you, the only thing wrong with this machine is the VGA connector to the mainboard.

--> Support: Well it will not be warranty covered.

--> Excuse me, i bought this computer with a one year hardware warranty, and i expect it. So Change my VGA connector and send it back to me.

--> Support: Well the laptop might still be broken, and cost will apply

--> (MAD !!! ) GET THE DAMN VGA CONNECTOR CHANGED AND SEND IT BACK. It will WORK !!

---------------------------------------------

Two weeks laters:

--> Support: We have received your machine back from the Germany labs. They have changed the VGA connector. But there is a scratch on the back of the LCD panel and the keyboard backplate is damaged. It will be 200 Euro charge to change these.

--> Buhahahawhahw, Does the laptop work and boot ?

--> Support: Yes

--> Buhawhahwhahw, Don't change anything. Just send it. Nothing else to be done.

---------------------------------------------

2 weeks laters : Haven't received the machine yet. Call to support tells me the machine is gone 16 days ago. I worry. Is it lost in mail ?

--> Visit to the local post office. Here is my box !!!!! Late, I didn't had to pay the transport, i actually got money back for it ( 20 Euro ).

The box rocks, and no further problems have appear. Sad, dangerous but happy at the end. No money was charged what so ever.

Enjoy !

WooHoo! Congrats, man! good to see you back!

I know it's tough getting ANYTHING honored in Europe once the purchase is made. They really need to come up to US/Canadian/Japanese standards.

Then again, Europe doesn't have such a litigious "sue everybody" society like we've developed...

Hyper Threading

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that Hyper Threading does make a difference in day to day computing.

Check out the video at tomshardware

I could have told you that...

Nice to see a 3.6GHz get smoked by a 3.06GHz... especially since that's what I have in my lappy....
