hard drive clicking sound - Sony Vaio A series

Thread Starter
I recently bought the new Sony Vaio A170 - It is amazing! - but I notice a persistent clicking sound from the hard drive about every 1-2 seconds. After a few rounds with Sony tech support we determined there is nothing wrong with the harddrive, but a google search showed me other reports from Vaio owners about the same problem in which the clicking sound is from the processor is turning on and off the hardrive every second to conserve energy. HOW CAN I STOP THIS ANNOYING CLICKING SOUND? please help.

I think its actually the HDD head parking itself. I think IBM/Hitachi drives were notorious for this. Your best bet is to swap the HDD, since this was an integrated design from the HDD MFG.

Yup, I had an IBM Thinkpad that had that hard drive clicking sound. It was annoying but that's about it. it never failed in 4 years I've had it. I also thought perhaps there was something wrong with it and maybe it was failing but its not the case.
It didn't happen as often as your Sony A series notebook, maybe 4-5 times a day tops.

this is not a life threatning issue. like taiwaneze7 said, swap the drive. i never actualy had a hitachi drive but i did hear of this problem from other lappy users. Even desktops often have the click with those drives.

My Maxtor and WD drives in my desktops click only when going/returning from stand-by. Because it is doing it every second...might cause an early failiure? can it? try to play around with your power management settings, if that doesn't help reduce the clicking...get a new drive

It's a power saving feature. Quick fix..

Download Intel Application Accelerator

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scri...l&submit=Go%21

install, restart and launch..

Select your hard drive > click on Advanced Power Management > set to Maximum Performance

Close program and the clicking sound should be gone.

Is it possible to change that setting without installing the Intel Application Accelerator?

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the Intel Application Accelerator causes problems with certain software (or hardware?). I can't remember exactly what though...

IAA has always been troublesome; fortunately, more than a year ago Intel has stopped supporting mobile chipsets. Older IBM/Hitachi drives used to click a lot without any detrimental effects. Hitachi's 7K60 is dead quiet.
