One word: fugly

It looks more like luggage than a backpack.

Check out this one. If it looks familiar, its because it is the Alienware backpack, without the Alienware logos. Dell also offers a version here that is the same, only cheaper. (I don't know why it cheaper than the manufacturer).

Hi Kingcow,

Thanks for the recommendation, but that bag isn't my type I'll edit my original post to also include that I'm not looking for a backpack version (as I'll be using the laptop for business and don't want to look out of whack.) I am, however, looking for a bag that can convert into a backpack (like the Dicota Twenty-Four Pack)

Any bag that was designed for Apple's 15" Powerbook will work for you. Try http://www.tombihn.com/ or http://www.sfbags.com/. I bought the RacerX bag from the second link, but it doesn't convert into a backpack.

wooster, does that bag fit the 8600? i'm actually looking for a backpack for a 8600, but it must offer sufficient protection. some backpack i've seen offer mediocre protection.

thanks

I use Kensington Saddlebag for my old HP, and have now started using it with my new i8600 and it works great. The computer's width does stick out about an inch - but it does fit just fine, nothing buldges out or anything.

If I didn't already have the bag I'd probably get something a bit different. But I truly do like the bag, I like it's design. It's not a backpack like most of the users on this board uses but a slight messenger bag. However -- if you like backpacks it can be used as a backpack if needed. It has hidden straps that can be taken out if you decide to use it that way. It's pretty cheap too I got mine for about $45 at Office Max back in 2002.

However, the Saddlebag Pro looks much better -- a bit more expensive , but looks to have a lot more compartments. Pretty cool bags, very durable. Very well made bag.

Call my crazy, but I got the deluxe nylon one from dell and really like it. it wasn't very expensive, holds tons of stuff, and is really well padded. It may not be "aftermarket," but I have no regrets.

Hey guys, thanks for your feedback.

My girlfriend and I looked around all the suggested sites and then stumbled across this one: http://www.kensington.com/html/4767.html -- We both like it for its American Chiropractic Association endorsement, it's contour panel, and multitudes of pockets for accessories. I might get it... can't find the dimensions for it though.

However, their regular version with no Xbrace lists the dimensions for the laptop compartment as:

External 16.5"L X 12.5"H X 6.5"W
Computer compartment 15.0"L X 10.5"H X 1.75"W
(http://www.kensington.com/html/4135.html)

According to my calculations, the Height is 0.2" short. But the External is 2" taller... think it'd still fit?

Scott, I was actually considering the regular Nylon one from Dell too. Don't think I'd go with the Deluxe version as it's a bit too wide. I have the Targus Deluxe whatever model it is that I bought from Fry's last week -- it's too wide and makes me look like a dork. Everybody said so too heh.

Hey Wooster,

Do you have that Mobile Edge? (Or does anyone?) I sort of like the style, but I'm wondering if it has two partitions. (One for the backpack and another for random junk.)

Thanks,
Ducky

This is what I got from Timbuk2:

Laptop bag Nirvana. I love this bag...fits the 8600 perfectly and has that messenger bag look with Timbuk2 quality.

I paid $50 for my Targus. It has everything I could possibly need. I have my camera and charger, food, water, pop, utensils, power cord, mouse, DVDs, headphones, room for little doodads and of course my lappy in it. And I still have room for speakers when I find some I like. It already weighs a ton. I can't imagine getting anything bigger. Besides, as far as I can tell, you're just paying for bells and whistles like more robust handles and rubber feet, fancier colors and the like when you buy one of the more expensive models. I don't see the point. Paying $50 was painful enough. I can't see paying 70 or 80 bucks for a backpack.

For those looking for a backpack, I'd suggest getting the least you can get by with and spend the extra money on your lappy. You'll probably get tired of lugging it around anyway and start leaving stuff at home that you think you don't absolutely need.

Heres the bag I purchased:
http://www.kensington.com/html/3208.html

Looks great and fits the laptop perfectly...

I first had the targus deluxe pack, but that thing is huge, and looked stupid... It was like a full out camping backpack... The pluses to it was it was very sturddy, and would preotect the computer very well... But I decided to return it for the Kensington "SaddleBag Sport Notebook Backpack"

I have the alienware version and it does have two partitions - only about 2/3 of the 8600 is covered in padded foam area. But it has lots of space, downside its a heavy bag even without the stuff in it.

hksscom: I think you have to go with the deluxe one for the 8600 because the laptop is so wide. heheh we're discussing bags for our laptops. dont tell your friends that !

scott: After I've done some more researching, I figure that the bag might be a little stretchable. If it stretches just an inch, it'll fit I hope. I'm going to place an order later tonight and report back. Kind of weird dimensions though: 17.5x13... The Targus Platinum Deluxe I was talking about is 17.5x15 and everybody said that it looked too wide on me. Hmm... Well, we'll see

Yeah, don't tell YOUR friends about it either

RacerX bag arrived yesterday. It's too small! I'm sending it back. 15" Powerbooks are smaller than Dell 8600's. Doh!
