Does this mean my hard drive is bad?

I got my laptop yesterday morning.

the laptop was working fine for a while and then programs began hanging up. if one hung, all the others would start to as well.

i ran the short version of the hard drive test on pc-doctor, and this is what FAILED:
device hts726060m9at00 (my hard drive, i presume) - SMART short self test (error code)

I re-installed everything, then ran pc-doctor again. i got the same test failure, although the rest of the hard drive tests passed.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?? Are the two situations connected??

thanksss

fire -- thanks sooo much for replying! the laptop seems to be working fine now, but i have sent for a new hard drive anyway.

this was the error, as told from pc-doctor: device hts726060m9at00 (my hard drive, i presume) - SMART short self test (error code)

I am not sure what it means -- will my hard drive fail soon? Does this mean the hard drive is bad, even though it seems fine now??

thanks again!
