Just ask yourself this very simple question:

"Games or portability?"

If its games then HP, if its portability then IBM.

You were saying to read the description, not to buy this unit of EBAY, right?
If so, yes, the person did seem to indicate that the nc6000 is a quality unit.
If you are also suggesting I get THIS one, no, I don't buy expensive stuff off EBAY, I have learned an expensive lesson that way.
Thank you!

I have been looking for reviews of the old 7500 card, but, of course a card that old is not going to be usually compared to anything as new as a 9600 or 9700. I assume it is THAT MUCH worse??

Anyhow, not to confuse the issue, because I AM BUYING A NOTEBOOK the first of the week, but:

If I was to expand consideration to a 15.4" widescreen WXGA (or any 15" XGA) would there be any other notebook to consider that has the same level (or comparable) of quality???

Thanks to you all.

ASUS M6BNe looks like a real nice combination of "grownup" looks, good quality, good screen, good portability, good battery life, good brand name, good price, and good video card. Only weak spot is 64megs of VRAM (which I suspect you would be fine with if you are seriously considering a laptop with a 4 generations ago GPU) and widescreen (which is subjective, personally many prefer it).

Available at either proportable or rjtech. ~$2k gets you a gig of ram a 7.2krpm HDD. By all accounts the screen is good, with acceptable response time and viewing angles. A true jack of all trades laptop that wont look silly at work and wont get embarrassed at play.

Not just talking trash here...I am strongly considering this very unit for myself as well....

look at that gradient issue! :P this is what happens when u have limited vert viewing angles and ur out of the sweet spot viewing angle...

its the same as the CL56/mitac8335/ferrari3000 and most all other 15" SXGAS :P

the bottom dark blue should be the same color as the top dark blue...

I'm actually using a Vaio GRX550 with a Mobility 7500 32mb (on XGA), which I bought about 1.5 years ago. As far as everyday stuff and what you've described needing it for, the video card is fine.

There's no hardware support for anything above DirectX 7, which is what makes it slower. The only game I've tried running on here which it refuses to run at all, has been Far Cry. Most other stuff will play if you turn off some details and such. I've played Neverwinter Nights, Jedi Knight II, Battlefield Vietnam, UT2003, etc., all play fairly well with settings turned down.

Well, let's say I have blown off the IBM (which I believe I have).
(I just posted the "jist" of this in a zt3000 thread:
If I am "sold" on HP, how would the nc6000 compare in value to the zt3000 series fully configured??
Is the quality that much more apparent, or worth it, in the nc6000?

I posted my reply in the other thread, but I'll do it here as well so we don't hijack his thread.

If you don't care about the better video card for gaming I'd go with the x1000. Runs cooler and quieter than the nc6000/8000. Keyboard on the x1000 is excellent as is overall build quality. The only advantage to the business line is the 3 year warranty that is included. Having owned an x1000 and nc8000 I would take the x1000 any day.

Thank you all, I am definately getting somewhere with this.
So, if I decided that WXGA was a better overall value,
Which is better quality and features overall:
1.) HP/Compaq zt3000/X1000
2.) ASUS M6N
Seems like they are about the same money, depending on where you get the ASUS, and how they are configured.
(other than the video card, which favors the ASUS)
Still overall leaning to the nc6000, but I am trying to get the feel for the zt3000 (which I have seen at Best Buy) vs the ASUS M6N.
Thank you,

x1000 quality is top notch. You can read a brief m6n review that a previous x1000 owner and current m6n owner posted here:

http://www.x1000forums.com/index.php?showtopic=5111

IMO, the Asus is probably the better value for the same price since you can run dual batteries and it has the 9600. If you don't care about hardcore gaming and are happy with 4 hours of battery life, the zt3000 is a great choice.

i really like the zt3000/x1000 alot, very nice machines. But if you do any gaming at all, that 9200 series vid card just wont cut it on newer dx9 titles.

Shouldn't be a big issue for me. I think my main concern (seeing the zt3000 at Best Buy) was the overall quality of construction and quality of materials.
What I would like to know (from anyone who has seen both) is:
Are the nc6000/nc8000 made better, and with better materials than the x1000/zt3000??
Seems like the only "knock" I have read on the nc8000 is that it ran a little warmer (hotter) than the x1000 series.
Not sure.

Hi-- does the ASUS M6BNe have that stupid logo on the top that says "notebook" ? thats my biggest reason for not choosing the asus. superficial i know, but that just looks lame. what do you think?

aamsel--

i am considering the same kind of laptops. I however, like the IBM better-- i think.. i want to see one in person, anyone know of any stores that carry them?

If the video card and the screen is what you want, you can get an IBM with xga, and a 9600 card...
i found a t42 with 1.7 dothan, with SXGA (thats what i want), and a 64mb card-- for $2,029 on the ibm website..

why have you decided against the ibm though? please tell me because i might get this one too.. im still looking at different ones..

can anyone post some pictures of the thinkpad t42?

Someone else (rcd, I think?) here on the forums got a T42p recently, and the screen has horrible ghosting. That's when Aamsel decided against it.

There isn't ANY IBM with 14.1" or 15" screen and XGA and a 9600 card.
Go to the website and you will see this. Also, if you go to thinkpads.com and go to the forums, do a search for TABOOK (that is the list of IBM models and specs.) I have checked this pretty carefully. The best video card on a Thinkpad with XGA is an ATI 7500. Please let me know if you find this to be incorrect.

Also, not many stores that carry IBM. None in my city. There may be a couple stores in NYC and other huge cities, and some college campuses.

The one with ghosting is the Flexview screen (T42 NOT T42p). It is the 15" SXGA+ and also the UXGA. They have the 64MB 9600 card and the ghosting problem.
The T42p is a 14.1" only and does not have the Flexview screen or the ghosting. It has a 128MB Fire2GL card and UXGA.
Hope this clarifies it, let me know if you have any questions.
