Quality of a 600m(510m) and D600

Hello. I'm about to buy a laptop and was wondering a bit about a Dell. But with time I've read so much bad about their quality that I'm not sure that's a Dell is something for me.

When that is said, the 2 models I'm thinking about is th 600m (the one called 510m here in Europe?) og the D600. What is the difference when it comes to the "long lasting quality" of those? A friend of mine called Dell to order a 600m/510m, but they adviced him to buy the Latitude D505, because the quality of the 510m/600m was bad.
My use is almost only surfing and texting, I'm attending the university in Denmark, therefore it's very important to me that it's portable, that it's wellbuild as it won't have a very comfortable life in the backpack and on the bicycle! Can either of those models handle my use?
Sorry for my crappy english, it's been a while since I used it last time :P

I have the 600M and it is a nice laptop, the latitude series is really nice especially if you travel a lot. I thought the big difference was the warranty and the the latitude has more composite type of metal on the top of the laptop.

The D600 has superior build quality compared to that of the 600m...for starters the lid of the laptop (which is essentially the case covering the back of the LCD) is made entirely of metal....in addition, the chassis of the laptop (the structure on the inside) is composed of 3 variations of metal...hence the "tri-metal chassis" name.

I bought the D600 this spring specifically for use at my college which I will be attending in the fall....as far as Dell laptops go, I would HIGHLY recommend this for its relatively small form factor and durable build quality....I'm fairly pleased with mine.

Make sure you get the accidental coverage with yours if you expect to be carrying it around with you 24/7....you never can tell what would go wrong.

The D600 is more than sufficient for wired/wireless internet as well as word processing...you'll also be able to play the occasional game on it with nary a problem.

The 600m games allot better. You can get up to a 64MB video card, and the the video ram can be 128 bit vs. 64bit.

But he never stated he needed it for games. Therefore, the logical conclusion would be the D600 as it offers the built quality that he is looking for.

I don't need it for games, even if I did the D600 would be best, as the 600m doesn't come with anything else than the intel onboard here where I live.
What is essencial to me is a superb building quality as it will get a rather rugh life. First I looked at the T40 from IBM, but it's rather expensive all though it's almost priced at the same level as the D600, the D600 offers far superior specs.
Dustpap, if I understand you correctly the chassis of the D600 is rather solid, does it squeak more than one could espect from fx. the T40? Or is it generally as solid as the T40 fx. or others in that "class"?
Would you recommend it for my use og should I look elsewhere?

Hmmm....I've handled a T40 before...it seems built like a tank, in my opinion.....however, either way you go you MUST MUST MUST get an accidental protection warranty for the type of abuse you will be putting it through.

Based on that...once you had an extended warranty/accidental coverage to the IBM it gets sooo ridiculously over-expensive you may as well just buy 2 really cheap laptops and use one as a replacement.

On the other hand, you can purchase a D600, which is still farily sturdy, with all that extra warranty crap....and remain under 2k quite easily. Personally this is the route I've taken....most of my college classes (especially the business/frosh ones) DEMAND I have my laptop with me in class....and they offered me a fairly nice discount on the D600 so I grabbed it with the 3-year on-site warranty with accidental damage protection.

I honestly don't think you will be disappointed....however, I recommend that someone else, on this board or otherwise, give you a second opinion before you make your final decision.

Well I still have some problems choosing which one to go with. As I will by the proctection warranty I could as well buy the 600m and just get it repaired when it breaks? Why should one buy a more expensive laptop then?
The T40 costs the same amount that the D600 does here, the D600 is just more powerful(I might not need that)

Well...in my opinion....forget about the 600m...go with either the D600 or T40.

Personally, I'd go with the D600...just for that extra "kick" of power, in the event you ever need it.

Either way though, you won't go wrong.

I haven't experienced an IBM laptop for years, but I know the Lat D600. And if you don't need the onboard Bluetooth, then I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Just ALWAYS buy CompleteCare (Accidental Insurance) with it. It can be SO much worth it.

Keep away from Inspiron models. That way, if you need phone support, you'll get shorter waiting queues. Inspiron is for home-user, Latitude is for companies, and IT-departments have done much troubleshooting before calling in, ergo shorter TS'ing with supporter, and ergo shorter wait time.

Just my 2 cents
