Just how much of a headache is this going to be? (TV tuner Q)

I'm an American living in Japan. I've been thinking about buying a 8886. The thing is I'm having trouble understanding what is going to be necessary for me to use the TV tuner in Japan. I only recently found out that even though Japan and the US have the same NTSC system, the tuner card for Japan is different than the US one...

Since that means I'll have to make a choice, I think I'll go for the Japanese tuner. Will this necessarily mean I'll need a different driver? Will this then also require that I have a Japanese OS loaded into my system? Any ideas whether or not a US tuner would work with a Japanese VCR/DVD?

What am I getting myself into..?

- EDIT -
And on top of that, did I just pick the wrong forum to put this question into?

Well, PCTorque posted something up a while back saying that if you want you can have sager install another tv tuner card in place of the standard one. I imagine if you opt to get the Japanese one, they will simply install it when they build your system and will include any necessary drivers/software for it. I doubt that you will need a Japanese operating system, but I have never had experience with that myself. I'm sure PCTorque can shed some light on this, and if you are really anxious to find out you can call Sager when they're open (although PCTorque will prolly have an answer on here before Sager even opens, lol).

The USA one won't work in Japan I was told and Sager doesn't offer a version for Japan unfortunately.

Is it a problem regarding different video input types? NTSC/PAL, or is it that the vcrs and dvd players there have different ports and need a conversion cable of some sort.

This is an importan question for me because I'm planning to go study abroad in Japan next year and the 8886, though heavy, would seem to be the perfect system, should its tuner actually serve as a tv.

if not, is there any other solution other than that $300 video converter that MindBender posted?

thx,

Kinky. (I hope my name does not offend people )

I don't remember the particulars, but basically there are two types of NTSC - the NTSC for almost everywhere that uses NTSC, and the NTSC for Japan . It doesn't affect things like video tapes, which work in all NTSC VCRs, but apparently the NTSC TV card integrated into the 8886 will not work in Japan, although it will apparently work in Taiwan, for example.

I have cable tv, so I will just run a coax into the computer from the decoder box. Apparently that will work, since I'd just be using the computer as a monitor. The same solution would probably also work if you run a coax out of a VCR, but I can't be sure any of this will work in the first place, it's still just a theory.

So, where are you gonna live in Japan? I'm in Gunma, which is about 100 km NW of Tokyo.

And to the Doc - thanks for the suggestion. I'll check it out.

And yet, is that not exactly what an AI would say..?

...I'll leave it to everyone else to come to their own conclusions, but I think I'm on to something here...

I mean, responding to 15 threads almost simultaneously? Didn't you say you were on dialup right now?

Hmmmmmmmm...

Lol, well, I am on dialup, but when I'm on I can respond pretty quickly cuz most of it is loaded into my cache now. I also just finished all of the other stuff I was doing at the same time (email, etc). If you want to believe that I am AI, then be my guest :-) I shall take it as a complement and endeavor to provide better service. :-)
