could the college prevent the usb drives from being used?
id prefer one over a floppy drive (for moving documents/presentations/etc in order to print them in computer lab)

Sure they could. Preventing their use would be as easy as offering no [accessible] USB ports

Personally, I've seen people use USB drives in every lab I've been in on campus. It seems that every computer around has an accessible USB port. I'm sure the rules and such vary in different places though, it'd be best to check it out with the institutions' admins or computing helpdesk etc. before you go pick up a laptop without a floppy.

could be like my high school
disabled floppy and cd drives
glued mouse ball covers to mouse-cant clean them anymore
blocked d/l of attachments-
rules:
no email
no games
no leisure surfing
and the comps are DELLs
$1500 paper weights.
but its okay since the school bugeted a $3000+ lcd projectors and who knows how expensive smart boards for each department-never seen them in use, tired to steal them but they were bolted to a cart.
