What's SPDIF and how do I use it?

I don't know much about this SPDIF jack on the back of my 5670, other than I can have 5.1 sound with it. If I bought a set of logitech's 640's, could I plug them into the SPDIF jack and be good to go, or do I have to go and buy something like a Y splitter cable? Because my laptop didn't come with any splitter cables for the SPDIF.

Same story again...

SPDIF has been beaten to death

the SPDIF is the hole with the light pulsing (unless you havent installed the audio drivers and enabled spdif in the bios) I didnt enable anything in the bios but it pulses red light which you can see quite plainly.

Its the 3rd port from the rear right corner of the laptop.

If the Logitech 640 came with a spdif (digital optic cable) then you can plug it in. DO NOT plug a headphone jack into the SPDIF socket - you might damage it permanently...

I looked up the logitech Z 640 and NO it does not have an SPDIF cable so you cannot plug it into the SPDIF port on your laptop.

do a forum search on s/pdif. There are a TON of good threads on it. Also a bunch of speaker recomendations. I got the Altec ADA 895's or something from overstock.com. Do a search on overstock.com for altec lansing--they're about $110. I'm too lazy to do the work for you.
