hi Eatsmice, could you tell me what you think about this laptop as im thinking of buying one.

Is the screen res big enough for you?
How do games play? (how many fps in UT2k4)
Hows the battery life with wifi on?
Do you like the build quality of it?
Does the screen suffer from ghosting?

Many thanks for your anwsers!

I called them last night and they said that V12 (the company who do your credit checks) still hadn't given them the all clear. I checked my email and lo and behold i had an email from V12. they sent me a form which i needed to print out, sign and send back to them. I tried this @ work and the printers just wouldn't print it so i called them and they said that they'll post it to me. This morning i got the letter from them and signed it and sent it out. It looked quite scary cause it said i had to pay 1.9k for it. Luckly i went thru it and figured out that i'd only pay extra if i didn't pay of in 12 months (which is what it sed on the website ) If V12 get the letter 2morrow and give the all clear to acernotebooks.co.uk they should send it out my lappie.

It seems this method adds an extra 2-4 days on top of the delivery and should only b done if you can wait and prefer saving money

Libertine . Take care when paying the balance, cos a late payment at the end hits you with all that interest. If you can, clear a month early and avoid this. Some companies have scammed this payment method in the past by "losing a payment". Better to clear early than try to prove payment after the event. You're safer on Visa and swap the balance to a zero percent card. No disrespect t the finance company, but I trust them as far as I can throw them

TrancerSteve, no ghosting on screen seen. Loaded C & C Generals (old favourite) on last night and it flies. Don't have UT04 yet, but about to load on HL2. When I chose it I compared the potential 3dmark03 with the 1850 marks my athlon 2800 desktop with Ti4600 gets, and it plays UT03 brill and HL2 with no probs at all.

Not run it on wifi on battery for more than 30 mins so far, so don't know about battery life while using it. It connected nicely to a b and a g net with no snags (apart from opening holes in the firewalls etc to let it connect!)

Screen res is good, with text clear. Have a 21" CRT on desk, but prefer playing on this nice wide screen.
Infra red port connects perfectly with SonyEricsson K700i for data swap.

Set power settings to home/desktop, to keep speed as high as possible, since I'll be using it for games on mains powerlead normally.

Build quality is excellent, no complaints on that score. Going somewhere dusty soon, so hope that slot loading multidrive doesn't die on me.

Yah hooo!!!! I just got an email from acernotebooks.co.uk saying they've dispatched my lappie. All in all the interest free cred option added an extra 8 day on. 4 of those days were weekends so it isn't too bad. Hopefully i should have the lappie soon!

I've got it!! Woo! My 2023 arrived and is soooo awesome!!1 Wide screen is great. Keyboard is great (i don't see what ppl were complaining about it) and the its completely and utterly silent!!! Sooo awesome. Gonna go update and get ATI gfx drivers.

woo Acer!!
Interested in what graphics driver you install. I swapped to XP Pro, took the hit on losing the Arcade quick start function. Installed Ati driver from the supplied system disc which is 6.14.10.6476, which is newer than the one offered from acer website. Ati bounced out when you select mobile, stating your manufacturer has a tailored driver to match notebook. hmmmm.
All else is running sweet so far.

I stuck with XP home. I updated the drivers to the Omega ones. They work just great slightly better than b4.

cheers for the info dude.
Only thing I'm not so sure about is the flexibility of the wi-fi software. Grabbing a Netgear WG511T card to run with it.
So far battery life has been excellent, watching a long dvd has not been a problem.

Omega drivers

Just installed Omega drivers and 3dMark03 jumped to 3048, just over a 200 point increase from the Acer supplied drivers. :-)

10 months on and no snags so far, still happy with it. Prefer using it to my desktop machine now.

1 year 1 month and 9 days with my 2023 Wlmi

After 1 year of 8 hours/day usage my 2023 still runs almost perfectly. 1 or 2 probs. that seems to be created by conflicts between windows (specialy SP2 and media player 10) and original software. Acer support has a major problem, that is the fact that they never upgrade drivers, isn't it?
I've just installed Mobile Catalist 5.9 and i scored about 1350 3DMark05! Is it good? Please state your scores.
I've replaced wi-fi drivers by intel's 9.0.2.1, that work far better than the original ones.
I could never find BIOS upgrades. Does somebody ever managed to upgraded it?
Last time i "measured" i scored 3186 PCMark04.

1452 on 3DMark05 - Omega 2.6.71
Don't believe it's representative though, as most tests fail to run on this beast.

Proset version 9.0.0.60 is working fine and leaving alone for now.

Running XP Pro SP2 happily. Loaded OK instead of Acer supplied Home, and just used the System disc to load the initial driver sets. Happy to lose the Arcade function, as I found the video quality poorer than PowerDVD.

Hey guys! Has anyone bought more memory to your aspire 2023?? Does it have 2*256 or single 512? and do i have to buy 2*512 333 ddr or one 1gb 333 ddr???

Memory upgrade 2023

Manual quote:
"Memory upgrade

There are two memory slots on your computer, one of which is occupied by standard memory. You can upgrade memory by installing a memory module into the other available slot." unquote

B*l*cks

If you follow the diagram you'll open up the back to find that your available slot is filled with a 256Mb stick. So my 512Mb machine that I had assumed would easily upgrade to 1Gb won't

Will be contacting Acer to voice my disappointment (understatement of the year).

Yeah, I just opened mine up and found exactly the same thing.

Not sure if it helps at all, but there's a guide on this forum (here: http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=35482 ) that deals with one of the Aspire models, it looks like a lot of the fittings are the same so I don't suppose it would be too difficult to upgrade the module under the Keyboard.

I know how you feel though, I'm just as annoyed about it as you are - problem is that mine's about 18 months old now so Acer probably won't be interested in my sob stories

Just to reinforce something that was said in an earlier post, I'm running mine on XP Pro SP2 with no problems at all. I've also got it dual-booting Ubunto Linux for good measure

Upgrade the RAM

Thanks dude.

Play Generals a lot and find the game wheezes a bit as you ramp up the skirmish games. Wanted to run to 1GB upgrade, but as I have already ordered 512Mb Crucial RAM, I'll see how it manages with 768Mb first before I head "under the hood"!

I'm sure the original advert read 512Mb - 1 slot occupied, but can't find it.

I'm also interested to see if the DVD multiwriter can be upgraded to a Dual layer burner. Anyone tried this??

Still love this laptop to bits though

Just upgraded my 2023 to 1 Gig having gone "under the hood", lifing the keyboard out. Now running 1 Crucial 512 with one Kingston 512 with no issues so far. Happiness reigns.
