Honestly, I use metal TV trays for my laptop stands. When I want to go sit in my backyard to watch the kids play and surf the internet with my wireless laptop, I carry a metal TV tray outside with me and it works incredibly well...and they are cheap as hell and sturdy to boot. For those of you who don't know what TV trays are here are a couple of examples:
