ATI Radeon 9700 64mb vs 9600 128mb vs 9700 128mb

Anyone have any links to benchmarks or real world tests of these chips? The reason for my interest is that i want a resolution higher than 1280X800 on a 15.4in widescreen AND the ATI 9700 128mb. I'm almost certain i don't want to go with the older 9600 but am open to any arguments for this chip.

Systems being considered are the ASUS W1N or M6N and the ACER Aspire 2026. The 1650X1050 res offered by the W1N is sweet but the 9600 is a downer. On the other hand, the Aspire has the 128mb 9700 but with a WXGA (albeit a nice one by all accounts) screen.

All information and comments are welcome as well as any suggestions for other Dothan based models i might have overlooked.

Thanks

aren't you luck. Here's a link to some benchmarks comparing the 9600/9700. Generally, you can expect a 15-30% increase in performance. My suggestion for you: if you can, wait! Don't blow your money on something you will not be satisfied with.

Thanks Tourney. It appears the review was comparing the 128mb of the chips. I'm wondering how the 64mb 9700 fares against the 128mb 9600 and also how the 64mb 9700 fares against the 128mb 9700 as well.

Any takers?

i think m10/m11 64Mb starts to suffer when you turn the res up in games like farcry. other than that your 3dmark scores will be close.

hey guys, i usually run games a 1026x768, put all settings on high, think a 9700 64 meg , p4,1g ram would handle it, ? i dont run it over 1024, cause the font gets to small..??
certainly. Res is the real killer for gpus.

Refer to my posts in the following threads:

http://notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=25898

Reviews comparing a 64MB 9600 series card (9700 Mobility ranges from 9600 Pro EZ to 9600XT speeds depending on how high it is clocked by the ODM) to a 128MB version seem hard to find -- probably because most desktop 9600s have 128MB.

I would recommend a 128 MB card because notebook video is generally nonupgradable, so you want to get the best card that you can a particular time. This will future-proof your machine to some small degree.

Crap! Just as i feared. I may have to compromise in the widescreen resolution department instead of gpu then...or get a Dell (gasp...shock...horror)
well, if you must have 4:3 why not consider the other m11 ODMs out there

I don't want 4:3. Was referring to the widescreen Dells

ah, i misinterpreted that. the 2026 is by all accounts a beaut

Yeah but the Geoforce4 460 Go was the best available when i bought my satellite laptop and with a sweet 15in 1600X1200 lovely screen. I'm so used to this res i don't think i could do 1280X800. They were also one of the first with DVD writers and subwoofer

Hy

in one of the previous posts, someone stated that high resolutions are the killers of a gpu.
Now, I'm looking at buying an Acer Travelmate 8003. It has a 9700 with 64MB. The native resolution of the screen is 1400*...
Will I be able to play games like FarCry fluently on the native resolution or is the 64MB version to light to do this?

(I'm from Belgium and at the time, I don't even have the choice to buy a 128MB version, as it is not yet available)

You wont be able to play farcry at native resolution sxga+, at least not very well. All you have to do is scale it down, games seem to play ok in non native resolutions.

For the record, i doubt the 256mb 9700 mobility wil play farcry at sxga+, mobility cards just dont have the pixel pipes to do it yet.
as roarak said, you'd have to scale your screen's resolution down to have good results; which isn't bad at all. The reason why XBox is able to play games that so many pcs struggle with is due to the resolution which is much lower on tvs.
Well, it doesn't bother me to scale down, as long as the quality is still acceptable!

Is there a Travelmate 800x owner who can confirm this?

Thx a lot!
